Meet Imogen Pickton

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Imogen Pickton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Imogen , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

Throughout my education I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do in terms of my career. I’ve always been creative so knew I wanted that to play a role in my future but didn’t really know what options were out there. My sixth form experience was quite different to what I’d expected due to the pandemic but that gave me time to look into different career pathways. I’d say ultimately I’ve found my purpose through freelancing and gaining experience within marketing. For me personal branding has been genuinely life changing so being able to help others to do that is definitely where my passion lies. I also hope to be able to help new marketers who were in the position I was! I love what I do and I’m really happy to have found a career that encompasses my interests.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I started my personal brand as a shy eighteen year old student. I’ve shared my journey into freelancing and my growth as a marketer which has gained me a following of over 15 thousand people. I have received incredible opportunities as a result of my online presence which is why I am so invested in personal branding. I find that there are so many unbelievably knowledgeable people who have amazing stories to tell but just don’t know how to go about it. Being able to help someone to build their personal brand and seeing them genuinely excited over the milestones that come with that is such a lovely feeling. I mainly help founders and online service providers in a range of niches from STEM to wellness!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

As someone who is self employed I think that my most important quality is organisation. I am SO organised, I have to do lists and everything is planned well in advance. This is crucial for keeping on top of my workload and consistently meeting deadlines.

To be a freelancer I also think you have to be resilient. It can be so tough! There will be times where clients leave, income fluctuates and it can also feel lonely. Being able to trust in your vision and keep pushing on in those lower moments is so important.

Another quality that has been important for me is my willingness to learn. I’d recommend networking and taking advice from people further on in their journey. I’ve also worked with some hugely talented individuals, learning from them and improving as a result. When you work in social media things are constantly changing so you have to be willing to learn and grow as you go.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My family are all so supportive of my career and my decision to go into marketing. I’d say the most impactful thing my parents did was support me through the journey of finding the right career path for me. I didn’t want to go to university and instead took a chance working for myself, they’ve always been really proud of me regardless and that support means a lot!
