We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Indigo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with INDIGO below.
INDIGO, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Keeping INDIGO’s creativity alive is definitely not a simple task, as much as we have many brilliant minds on our team. Yes, we are dancing and that is a creative art form, but creativity is certainly hard to come by due to the fact that being a coverist means to copy. We as K-POP dance coverists are given a reference of the original artist’s choreography, giving little to no leeway on how we can make the cover with our own colors. However in that small space stands the opportunity to keep our creativity alive by utilizing the K-POP song to create our own original choreography or formations, making our own outfits with numerous resources on hand and cultivating filming and editing direction. in addition, the recent expansion of our team with new members brings forth more ideas from more people-contributing to the creation of a hub that is constantly fueled with new ideas.
Of course, there are plenty of other factors that buffer the flow of our creativity, including burn out and imposter syndrome. It’s easy to compare oneself to others, and this is no different for us as we compare how we look to other larger, even more successful teams. With social media platforms including in the image of any group, the numbers regarding our outreach really impact our mood and urge to continue the creatives processes. Despite all of this, the memories of the fun we had during the times we brought our creative ideas to life with the members that are also our friends, along with the times that the numbers do show good signs rekindles the flame and reminds us once more that the constant progress is all worth it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Focused on Professionally?
INDIGO is always focused on providing professional, quality content while expressing creative freedom with our visions. At the end of the day, having fun with everyone the way we wish to have fun is something that we really wish to uphold as a team.
What exactly do we do?
As simple as it sounds it is completely true: we dance for our happiness. By taking the opportunity to come together as one team under INDIGO’s name, we can all take the chance to escape from the real world and fully dive into our collective passion for dance and K-POP. Outside into the real world however, we are all living out our lives differently, as INDIGO has members varying from students to full-time workers that clock in from 9 to 5. Regardless, this is the beauty of our team, the way we can come together from numerous backgrounds and cultures and achieve this form of happiness.
Most Exciting thing about us?
The most exciting thing about INDIGO is how much we value creative freedom. Giving our members the opportunities to express themselves opens the door to so many possibilities in elevating our covers and adding our own flair to them. Especially since the majority of INDIGO’s members love the K-POP music genre, creating dance covers in your own way can generate happiness like no other. This form of fanship fuels the desire for more and to do more, which is such an exciting thing for us. As we progress, we have come a long way from filming by hand on an iPhone camera and watching editing tutorials to piece our favorite takes together. With development, we have upgraded our skill sets and become even more equipped to bring our visions to life.
Whats new?
Though INDIGO is always preparing new content, we recently have put up a notice for auditions! This way we hope to add more new members that wish to dance to K-POP and express their own creative freedom by contributing their original ideas and skillsets to our happy, passionate family. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first quality that INDIGO possesses is the ability to organize. Though it sounds quite simple, running a K-POP coversit group takes consistent and persistent organizational effort. We run our own Discord channel that is divided into different sub-channels that represent categories of content creation, along with utilizing other organizational tools such as When2meet for scheduling purposes, and agenda sheets that lay out the processes for each and every practice or event. In addition to this, managing all of our social media platforms take immense work, as all of the content we post is timed and monitored, along with being immediately reflected upon so we can plan what to post next. Ensuring all of this is done in an orderly fashion is most certainly not easy work, but we as INDIGO make it a priority to organize so that all of these processes can run as efficiently as possible.
The second quality we have is our experience. As mentioned previously, all of our members come from different backgrounds, which highlights the various levels of experience is brought to the table. Regardless of the amount of time each member has spent dancing, each and every one of them bring different skillsets that benefits INDIGO greatly-editing, filming, audio work, outfit making, etc. We take all of these together and utilize them as a collective.
The last quality that we’d like to share is the bond of friendship that all of the members share in INDIGO. We strive to create a comfortable and safe environment for all of our members. We also try to prioritize the fact that we are friends before members, and thought his does not take away from the responsibilities all of the members are expected to uphold, this actually adds on to making these responsibilities a lot easier. We build consideration for others by creating connections through working together: the memories of having fun under the same interest binding us and creating a productive chemistry that excels for us in both the coverist and friend environment.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
The biggest piece of advice we’d like to give to other coverist groups that might be starting out is that “communication is key”. Yes, of course, it does seem cliché, but we do believe that things that are repeated frequently may reflect that it is simply that important. In all of the three qualities that were stated previously, communication is a core that keeps the gears running. Without proper communication when it comes to updating schedules and adhering to deadlines, the effort to keep a coverist group organized crumbles. The lack of expressing that one can help in an area of our coverist work would make the process of creating and releasing covers exponentially more difficulty. Furthermore, direct communication regarding opinions and emotions will never make the bonds between our members as friends as strong as we wish for them to be. Therefore, we encourage for all coversit groups to speak your mind respectfully and responsibly to one another, as it will most certainly contribute to not just three, but ALL qualities your team has in making all team activities more proactive.
