We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Irene Rose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Irene, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
I always make sure to take off day at least one day per week and do the things that i love or enjoy so i can distract my mind from work; like in summer i do paddle-boarding, hiking, and walk to downtown Plymouth 25 minutes each way from my house, get nails done and lunch with one of my close friend. And in winter more like indoor activities like rock climbing with husband, go to movie or symphony.
Selfcare is important to prevent the burnout. Even just to take a break and stay away from the phone for couple hours it could prevent the burnout. Also at least 3 times a week i practice yoga, really help for my body and mind.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m originally from Indonesia, moved to Michigan in 2017 after I got married with my husband in 2015. I’m blessed with three amazing step children and a cat, i named him Harimau means tiger in bahasa Indonesia. My journey in the lash industry started on November 2018, first time i got certified in classic training. Long short story right now I am a licensed esthetician and 9 times certified in lash industry.
I’ve been working on my lash product line for couple years and now they are available in store pick up only.
Currently I adding permanent jewelry to my services since i got certified as a permanent jeweler on last November 2022.
For some of you that are not familiar with it, permanent jewelry is a custom fit jewelry without or with clasp. We carry gold filled and sterling silver that are more affordable and tarnish free as long as you do the after care at home. For example after the jewelry get exposed with chlorine or salt water, just wash them right away with your body soap or dish soap, even better with jewelry cleaner.
Permanent jewelry has become really popular in the last couple years, I’ve been doing pop ups on the weekend and most of them were successful i would say. If you own a studio or salon, it’s a good additional service you could have right now.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Talk about the qualities, i feel like always about the product, good quality product will create a good result. Skills itself i feel like sometimes you have to learn by doing or hands on. But if we talk about specific skills like good at customer service is another thing. Your client is the king, you have to serve them and at the same time you have to set boundaries as a business owner. Areas of knowledge for me are pretty challenging , a side to learn more deeper in lash industry in US it has to come with knowledge about English since English is not my mother language feels like it’s an extra work right there.
Based on my experience if you are new at the lash industry, i would suggest to always have an open mind for new skills, training and conferences or expo. It’s always new information out there, invest to yourself. It won’t be easy but it will be worthy,.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My husband was the most person who helping me financially and mentally. My two stepdaughters was my heroes, the willingly to be my model i just started do lash extensions, i will never forget i glued Kylie’s eyes. By the end of service i told her to open her eyes and she responded you glued my eyes and I can’t open. It was hilarious, so believe every lash artist start on somewhere.
