We recently connected with Iris Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Iris, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I developed my ability to communicate effectively when I realized it was killing me the more I internalized! My health began to scream at me through physical elements that did not align with my DNA. I realized symptoms that I was experiencing, were not even generational. I knew I had to investigate and take a deeper dive as to why my body was yelling at me in such a way!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I love giving back. I love serving and helping others. I’ve been so gracious to work within the non-profit sector for going on over 20+ years, and it has been truly rewarding. During the day, I contract as an Internal Operations Manager for a historic organization located in the heart of downtown Houston. I serve my client under my administrative firm, Executive Support Services. I as well, own my own catering firm called Iris’ Kitchen, which specializes in small and large private events, prep meals and personal chef bookings. What excites me the most is being a wife of 16+ years, and a mother to four beautiful queens. I love what God has blessed me with and I truly believe these are opportunities I can teach others to obtain.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey the three areas of knowledge that were most impactful were first, understanding how important it is to have a personal relationship with the Creator. If I did not truly know God, I would be lost. His Spirit guides me, He is my Provider, Comforter, Refuge and friend. Second, would be taking good care of self. Self care is essential. You can not pour into others, if you are empty with nothing to give. When I say self care, I mean specifically mental health. Your mental health must be nurtured. You must understand what makes you tick. Why do you behave the way you do? What triggers you? What prompts you to respond? Who has the power to steal your joy? Assessing the root causes of why you can find yourself unbalanced at times. These are essential questions to ask yourself. Lastly, surrounding yourself with others who have a sincere and genuine concern for your wellbeing, this is critical. We can tend to cut folks off or put up walls or guards, and we miss opportunities to allow others into our lives. We must learn how to establish healthy relationships. These relationships will be the lifelines to a days when you feel like you are sinking.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My family! They have helped me to develop essential skills and qualities is coming to the understanding that I do not have it all together. I make mistakes and I am not always going to make the mark. I am not going to always be everyone’s, everything. As well, being okay with who I am today, and knowing I am thriving to become greater tomorrow. Giving myself grace, time, space, and peace to learn and continue to grow. This has helped me to be content with who I am, and who I know I will one day be. Knowing I am a continued work in progress, but I am love by God Almighty. These areas of reflection have helped me to grow into a more seasoned wife, mother, leader, business owner and friend.
