We recently connected with IrvingSoria and have shared our conversation below.
Irving, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
When i was a little kid my family didn’t had much and my father wasn’t around either, so my grandparents take care of me and my grand father, who now passed away, used to have a bicycle shop and from my early 3 or 4 years he started teaching me how fixe or assemble new bicycles; he always told me that one always had to get their hand dirty so you know how much effort is put in all the thing around us. He also told me to be the example, if you want something done right you have to know how its done; you have to put your hands, mind, body and soul to all the things you do so they have a little bit of you on it.
And he always told me that no matter what or who i wanted to be in life, just be sure to be the best, no matter if you want to collect trash or be an engineer, just be the best and give always everything you have.
He forever and always is on my mind even with the little thing like hanging a picture or the biggest like making a huge event, ill always remember him.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
When i started trying to figure out what to be in my life, at the begining the answer was easy: i didnt want to go to college! jajajaj (what a fool). Even with my father, who like at my 12 year reconnect with me, was pushing me and offering to pay for it i was relentless on a har NO.
One person in my life, who till this day i thank, told me like just understand how many people would like that oportunity and you’re throwing it away. She told me that some day, not near, but some day i will regret not having a degree and dam if she was right.
I started studding Finances and accounting at one of the nicest college in México City that is Anahuac Norte, but like in 8 months i realize i was miserable, not just because of the career, but also because of the environment that those tipe of college had, and really really wasnt for me.
I obviouslly dropped out and started thinking like ok, if im going to study something is going to be something that at least makes me happy, and not just do it for the money, that yes is important but the money will eventually come in your life; so i looked back at my life and realize that the really most important thing in my life at that point and that had been for the last 8 or 9 years had been getting to all the concerts that i could go, i mean yes i would go and see my favorite bands and go to my favorite festivals, but i also liked to buy random tickets to random bands that i had no clue about them because the thing that i like the most was the feeling that you get of being around 100 or 10,000 people who like the same thing and get united in a unisone loud choir of that specifically song, and man i get chills just buy writing this down.
So it was clear but not that clear, because now that i work in this i know that their so many people involved that they are a lot of ways to get in, but had to think straight what is what i wanted t do, so upon a lot of searching (this time i made a research) ive get to know about the Audio Engineering Carreer and i was inmediatly blown away; my mind couldnt understand that there was one guy, just one, in charge of making an album or a concert sound the way it does, and he was the one in charge of giving that chill feeling, so i was like ok, thats it, lets go!
Unfortunately they’re a lot of different types of audio carrers, you can compose, be the producer, be the engineer and so and so, the thing is that i went first to Fermatta, a music school but most focused on composing and writting, and i wanted to be an engineer, sooo i changed for the 3th time of degree, and im no telling you this to brag, believe me im not that proud, but may this be an example that not always your first choice should be definitive, you can make mistakes and for sure you’ll make more so dont be afraid to stand up for your self if you’re not a 100% sure that this is what you want, i had so much friend that study something that they never ever applied in their lives and that is sad because of how much money the spend.
Well the thing is that i find a college named SAE, School of Audio Engineering, and i really want to make an enfasis in here, this was the best best best best decision i had ever made in my life, and don’t get me wrong now im married, i have my own company but i wouldn’t have anything that i have now if it wasn’t for that school.
This was a great school not just for the incredible amount of learning and empowerment, but because they give us so much opportunities and i made the best friends that i have and work with them till now.
Starting my third and last year of college i start working at a AVI production company called ‘Surface’, and well that is were all started, they were the ones that give my first big chance and boy if i take it, i worked ther for 6 years and in that time i did the most amazing shows that i could ever imagine, i worked with Alejando Fernandez, Aleman, Angeles Azulez, Jungle, Parcels, for naming some. Also i make a lot of huge and impressive events for a lot of important brands like AMEX, BMW, Rolex, Don Julio, Youtube, Google, and so.
For sure was an amazing time but in the other side a had no time at all for my personal life, my inner schedule get so messed up because of the horrible shifts, that some times could be for 36 hours, 40 hours or so for weeks at a time or even month, but dont get me wrong, it was amazing, and it realised the beast and the best inside of me and i can even tell that i became the best version of me.
As i told, im married now, and that was a huge part of taking the decision to resign from Surface, now i want time for me, and for my family, even if its just my wife and 3 dogs, they’re so so important to me that i want to be around as much as i possibly can.
Thanks to that decision i started working on my own, i mean by now a lot of people know me and the best thing is they trust me to be the person in charge of this huge events and be sure that everything is going to be always the best; to be the person that when you arrive everything gets done is a feeling that i cant describe, is a position that i never knew could have, but is an awesome feeling.
My company is called In Waves, you can find us in instagram as @in.wave.s and have a look of what this crazy and little weird guy and by the hand of some of my best friends do, because yes is my company but how boring it would be if my guys arent there with me at the top? if is not all together i prefer non at all.
Shout out to Sebas, Nabor, Efren, Ruben, Bruno and all who are part of In Waves.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think that the three most important things are: -Have judgment, criterion i such an important thing even fr the small decisions in life.
-Be humble, i cant tell you how much people are wrong on what they think they deserved.
-Always have a smile on your face, you never know what is happening on other persons life, so great them with a smile and maybe you. cant turn their whole day around.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Being scared, some times life change so quickly that is hard to appreciate it.
But don’t be, it could sound a little bit hippie, but life has a path for you, and it’s made for you so enjoy the ride.
