We were lucky to catch up with Isaac Ford recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isaac, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
There are two things that really hinder artists: one being ego and the other being low self-esteem. It is truthfully worth always keeping these two things in check, otherwise they can be quite detrimental. I have found that having a good sense of purpose and value are useful when sharing one’s art, whereas more toxic outward methods to prove oneself tends to be unattractive and ultimately ineffective.
In my case confidence comes healthy mental practices including positive affirmations and meditation. I have also found factual assessment when developing skills tends to be more productive then simply using labels like ‘bad’ which ultimately have a negative impact on self-esteem.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the bassist and backup vocalist for The Black Hole which is a popular blues/rock band in the valley. The Black Hole focuses on creating original songs while also reimagining popular covers. The band has won the International Blues Challenge in Arizona for 2023 and continues to play all over the world in the United States, Europe and South America.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I am grateful for my education at Arizona State University where I majored in music. During this time I got to learn all about theory, history and string technique in a deep and meaningful way. I also believe learning good practice methods is another beneficial skill in learning my craft. My time with my instrument is far more productive then in the past where it lacked structure. Lastly, I would say professionalism has become one of my best qualities. Being mature even when it’s difficult and standing strong in what’s right.
It’s important to pace oneself. Don’t burn out, but on the same note don’t get too comfortable. Success in entertainment requires consistency.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My wife Zoe has supported me like no other. Through it all, she has always been by my side.
