We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Isabel Meijering. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Isabel below.
Hi Isabel, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
I have most definitely learned this lesson the less-easy way. Burn out avoidance comes down to 3 things: 1. doing what you are passionate about, 2. being compensated appropriately for the amount of work you are putting into everything and 3. having great boundaries around what you are doing. Let’s break these down further . 1. Doing what you are passionate about- it is really easy to feel burnt out when there is no spark to what you are doing. Like really, really easy. So whatever you chose to do in this life, find something that lights you up. If you are in a situation or a job that is wearing on you, focus on what you love about it. Even if you are in the process of finding something new, while you are there, focus on the positives. This has helped me through many iterations of what I do now. When I worked for someone else, I focused on the fact that I was practicing the medicine that I love. No, working for them was not my long term plan, but while I was there I learned a lot and focused on the excitement of launching my career!
2. Being compensated appropriately – of course, the big topic here is financial compensation. There are other ways to be compensated as well including energetically, through benefits or food tokens and so much more. However you are being compensated, it has to feel equal to how much work you are putting in. When I worked for a corporate place, I was ok with my financial compensation as long as I was also given free treatments, yoga classes and snacks. That felt really good to me for a long time. Now that I work for myself, I know that my salary I give myself must feel worth everything I am putting in. This will be different for everyone, just make sure it feels really yummy to you.
3. Having great boundaries around what you are doing- this a huge one for me. I always make sure my week is not packed full of both work and personal activities. Because if it is, I don’t have any fun, If I never have alone time or time to rest, even met fun activities feel like a burden and that’s not the point! So I make sure I have enough rest, enough unscheduled time and enough fun time to balance the work I am doing.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Isabel Meijering and I am a Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine as well as an NLP Life Coach located both online and in Bastrop, TX. I am the owner of Admiring You Wellness. In my practice, I look at the whole person in body, mind, soul, and spirit to get patients functioning in their lives the way they have always wanted to, or have not been able to because of either physical or emotional pain and blocks. My previous educational background is a Biomedical Sciences Bachelor’s degree with a minor in psychology. I realized my deep love for both eastern and western medicine, and went on to pursue both her Masters and Doctorate in Acupuncture and herbal medicine. My love for working with the mind-body connection started with an introduction to yoga and grew from there. I became a Kundalini Yoga Instructor while studying acupuncture. Shortly after, I also became a certified Tuina practitioner through the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA) and I specialize in cupping therapy through International Cupping Therapy Association (ICTA). This led me to first start practicing with releasing pain and emotions with acupuncture and bodywork. I noticed a deeper need for emotional healing with many clients and went on to become a hypnotherapist and life coach. Through all of the modalities I practices, I am able to help clients be in tune with their bodies, minds, spirits and souls in order to heal. I write up with a treatment plan for each client based on their individual needs and desires; I know there is no one size fits all healing plan and navigate each client’s path individually. I lead several events a year and the best way to be in the know is to follow me on instagram, join my mailing list, and check out my website!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey to where I am now are authenticity, intuition and determination.
Authenticity has been by far the most important because it is what drives everything I do. Authentic communication helps me get to the root of both mine and my patient’s problems and desires because we set the precedent of deep, impactful communication. When authenticity is the main priority, everything else falls into place. This is because living authentically naturally puts me in alignment with anything I need and desire. I can clearly communicate my own needs whether it’s in my business or personal life and people know exactly where I stand! Being authentic feels very safe to both me and those around me, because it takes guess work out of it and focuses on relationship building.
Intuition is the next quality that has gotten me to where I am because without it, I literally would not be here. I was accepted into Veterinary school and about to make moves to go when I realized that it was not the medicine or the career field for me. My intuition led me to acupuncture in a very whimsical, roundabout way that had absolutely zero logic to it. Logic is sometimes really over rated. Getting quiet and listening to your heart will take you far- it’s how I got to where I am now! My advice is to give yourself space to consider all of your options and really think about what it is you want. Out of life, out of life, out of everything. That will allow you to make decisions based on where you want to be.
Determination- The path ahead is not always easy, and it is not supposed to be. Often time the most exponential growth comes after a period of discomfort. The universe loves to test you to ensure you are really going after what you want. My advice is to keep going! Know that just because something is difficult does not mean it is the wrong decision. Stick with you goals and you gut.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is ready to make strides forward in their wellness journey. They are ready to have vulnerable, down to earth and open conversations about their health and where they want to be. They are open to different modalities and techniques to get them moving in the direction they want to be in. My ideal clients are all in for their health and wellness goals. This could be something physical or mental because we know that there really is not much of a difference between the two. My ideal client is open to looking at themselves through the lenses of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. We will create a plan that feels good to them knowing that there is not one size fits all to anyone’s journey.
