We recently connected with Isabell Buttke and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isabell, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
This is an easy question, I get my work ethic from my mother and grandparents. Ever since I was young I always saw them working so hard to build a life for themselves and strive to get everything they dreamed of. And I knew that’s exactly how I wanted to be, so at the age of 13 I got my first job. Since then i’ve had 2 jobs for the last 8 years, working 6-7 days a week to build a life for myself as well.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi! I’m bell, owner of CakedUp. I am a 21 year old Cottage Baker based out of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I mainly specialize in custom Cakes and Cupcakes, but have a wide variety of other things I offer! I grew up in a small town just outside of Eau Claire and have had a passion for baking since i’ve been young. It’s always been a dream of mine to own my own shop one day. Baking to me is so much more than just a job, it’s seeing that ear to ear smile on the 7 year old birthday girls face when she sees her Barbie cake. Bittersweet moments like that is what i enjoy most about my job.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things I pride myself in most is responsibility, dedication and hard work. Those three things have impacted every move i’ve made to get to where I am today. My advice to people who are early in their journey is to never give up. If your dreams and goals for yourself don’t scare you then they aren’t big enough. You need to go after everything you want for your life, because at the end of the day, even if you fail it’s better to know that you tried and didn’t give up. And if that does happen, then you try again and again until you succeed.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area and growth and improvement in the past 12 months has been believing in myself. If you were to tell me a year ago i’d be running a cottage bakery I wouldn’t believe you. A year ago I was working at a job I had no passion in, it was physically and mentally draining. I finally decided to listen to my friends and family and took a chance on myself. And I can tell you that is the best decision I have ever made. Was it terrifying? Absolutely, but do I regret it? Not for a second. I couldn’t be more proud of myself for doing what was best for me, and finally following my dreams.
