Meet Ishjon Hawkins

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ishjon Hawkins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ishjon below.

Ishjon, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

I learned to let the work speak for itself. Being here in Utah 9 times out of 10. I’m the only person who looks like me. When I’m in certain rooms. Networking with open minded people has been the key to my success. Always listen to what people have to say whether it’s negative or bad. Stay consistent!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a local DJ and music producer here in Utah. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Spy hop, Twist Bar & Bistro/Exchange Johnnys on Second, Boomerangs Downunder Bar, KRCL radio 90.9, Bash app, Mic master’s alliance, Utah Creative Arts Foundation, Salt Lake City Arts Council and more! Very excited to work with new venues in this growing economy. It feels good to bring culture to Salt Lake City. My brand focuses on music production and preforming my DJ set at various venues. I will be selling merch that represents my brand in the upcoming months. All my upcoming events will be discoverable on the Bash app / community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Being from a musical city like New Orleans and having a mother with a CD collection has helped me tremendously!
I also was in band during middle school, and I took an engineering class in high school as an elective.
Work ethic has played a major part in my success. Also building the right relationships is key.
Never give up, was the best advice I received as a teen. Life is marathon not a race, never give up!

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

Being able to navigate different cities and build relationships. I feel in love with the uncertainty of things.
In the last 12 months I’ve seen how things operate in Utah. I have a better understanding of how to grow the music scene in Salt Lake City. My production has grown in the last 12 months due to the strong music community here in Utah.
Look forward to working with hungry artist here in Utah.
