Meet Isis J. Ramirez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Isis J. Ramirez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Isis J., thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

I like to avoid burnout by all means necessary. But living in today’s fast-paced society tends to cause burnout. I really love to disconnect from all sorts of technology. Instead of scrolling I turn my phone off. I definitely find myself turning pages rather than binging a new show, it creates better focus and relaxation for me. A big component in avoiding burnout would be planning. New things constantly pop up for me but I feel like I always have some sort of weekly plan that helps me keep my head on straight. I love to pick up new hobbies or also try something new whether it be food, a place, or a routine. By disconnecting from media, planning accordingly and trying new things I tend to avoid and overcome burnout.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I would refer to myself as an Artist. I have a passion for creating spooky and unsettling projects, but more importantly I want all my projects to leave a mark in some way. I’ve been acting since I was fourteen years old. It’s definitely the longest pursuit I’ve had since I came into the world. It means so much to me to inspire and make room for people that look like me. The thing I get most excited for are new perspectives, from scripts to mindsets: I’m always learning so much and I find that fascinating. There is history and knowledge to be studied everywhere and I feel as though I will always be a student. With all that being said I do try and find time to pause and take myself out of work mode. I recently placed Quarter Finalist at Her Vision International Film Festival and that was a huge honor. I never saw myself wearing a different hat, acting is what I thought I should stick to, but limits are meant to be broken. I’m so happy I decided to play all the roles within this project because I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. The film I created over a year ago as a student will be available for the public to view very soon. It’s so exciting and scary, but I’m ready for it.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

In my early days of starting out I wish I had a strong mentor to tell me what to do and how to do everything. But everyone does and it’s not possible. I’ve gained so much insight from life and that’s so special even if it hurts at times. Perfection is false. Often times we all want to be perfect, I’ve accepted that I’m not nor do I believe anyone is. Trying new things can be scary. You will truly never know until you pursue something. The “what if” should make you excited not discouraged. Another component I found on my journey is my own happiness. It’s as if I woke up one day and realized I was doing things that were not making me happy. I was staying in contact with people that broke me down instead of build me up. Going to events that I didn’t want to be at. Feeling exhausted from trying to be there for everyone when I didn’t even have myself. I was putting my happiness on the line for others majority of the time. It takes a toll on a person and no one should have to go through that, even though I know several do. Moving forward, I urge everyone to respect themselves first, focus on the good, and try new things. The best stories are the most arduous, other wise it would be boring.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

I would say lots of growth and improvement have hit me like a train over these last twelve months. The biggest area would be within myself. I’ve had significant career happenings and amazing news across the board in that aspect. I don’t think that any of that would have happened if I didn’t improve my sense of self. Taking time to reflect on projects or a big accomplishments is something that is beginning to come easier to me. My past self would have simply just moved onto the next thing. As humans we’re always trying to see what’s next as if it’s a rush or a race, I’m understanding that it’s ok to take time and reflect on things before heading straight into the next project. Life would never be enjoyable if we couldn’t cherish it; it would be a blur of colors and a hazy collection of memories. Living in the present and focusing on what’s right in front of me has made me feel better within myself, as a person and more excited for projects I’m passionate about.
