Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ivonne Tejada Cruel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ivonne, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Imagine stepping into a bustling world of creativity and innovation, where the vibrant streets of New York City serve as your canvas, and every window display tells a story of ingenuity and style. That was my reality as a designer in the production and window display industry, where I delved deep into the heart of design, soaking in inspiration from the eclectic energy of the city.
Each project was a journey, a canvas waiting to be filled with imagination and flair. From intricate installations to eye-catching window displays, I poured my passion into every detail, constantly pushing the boundaries of what was possible. Along the way, I had the privilege of collaborating with some of the most talented minds in the industry, each encounter sparking new ideas and shaping my vision of what design could be.
Yet, amidst the whirlwind of creativity, I found myself yearning for something more. It was during my time working closely with various creative departments at a pioneering fashion store in the heart of NYC that I had my epiphany. As I shared my knowledge of design software and materials for installations, I realized that my true calling lay not just in creating visually stunning displays, but in empowering others to unleash their creativity and pursue their dreams.
With this newfound clarity, I embarked on a journey of transformation, enrolling in the School of Visual Arts to pursue a Masters of Arts in Teaching. The decision to transition from production design to a career focused on education and community building was both daunting and exhilarating, but I knew it was the right path for me.
As I immersed myself in my studies, I had the opportunity to explore my interests in depth, guided by mentors like Catherine Rosamond, Chair of the Art Education Department at the School of Visual Arts. It was through her guidance that I discovered a love for painting, a medium that had always intimidated me. But with each brushstroke, I found a sense of freedom and expression that resonated deep within my soul.
Painting became more than just a hobby; it became a means of connecting with nature and sharing the beauty of the world around me. It was through art that I found my purpose – to bring people together, to inspire creativity, and to foster a sense of community through shared experiences.
Now, as I look to the future, I am filled with excitement and passion for the possibilities that lie ahead. My purpose is clear – to create a space where art and nature converge, where people can come together to explore their creativity, and where dreams are born anew with each brushstroke. Through education, collaboration, and a shared love for making, I am determined to bring my vision to life, one creation at a time.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As an Afro-Dominican multidisciplinary artist, designer, and educator, I’ve dedicated my career to merging my passion for education and nature through my artwork and design. I attended Altos de Chavón School of Design (2010), Parsons the New School for Design (2013) and School of Visual Arts (2019).
Before my teaching career catapulted, I worked in the production design industry in NYC, gaining valuable experiences in design skills and project management. Now, with a holistic approach to teaching arts and design from 9 to 12 grades (2019 – current), I aim to bring everyday experiences and problem-solving skills to my students, while advocating for environmental and mental health causes in both the school community and my artistic work.
My work has been exhibited in various galleries and cultural centers in the Dominican Republic and New York City, and I’ve been recognized as an outstanding educator in NYC for three consecutive years (2021-2023).
My place of dreaming and creating is my creative project, Studio Tejada. At Studio Tejada, I celebrate the profound beauty of nature and its ability to awaken our creative spirits. My designs are intricate tapestries of nature woven with hues, shapes, and textures borrowed directly from the places that inspire me to create my artwork.
I wish for people to picture their living space adorned with the vibrant colors, shapes and textures of a tropical rainforest, the Caribbean beaches flora and the beauty in nature that I got to experience growing up.
Studio Tejada represents more than just a design studio; it embodies a philosophy. I champion creative freedom, encouraging you to explore your artistic side and seamlessly blend it with the splendor of nature. My goal is to continue to create designs that are versatile, inviting people to mix and match, experiment, and find their unique expression with prints, textiles and objects inspired by textures and shapes found in nature.
My work focuses on the beauty of nature and the connection between humans and the natural world. Each piece is infused with personal stories that reflect my identity and experiences, from childhood to the present, growing up in the Dominican Republic, being able to travel and experience my country to the fullest. Traveling to all the National Parks in the region, hiking, camping and learning from the local communities, where I was able to be one with nature, and learn from it all from a young age.
Through a variety of visual art media and the design of everyday life objects, I aim to tell stories that resonate with others and foster a deeper appreciation for the world around us.
Let’s celebrate creativity, education, and the wonder of nature together.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My advice for those early in their entrepreneurship journey is to actively engage with your interests, prioritize empathy and human connection in your interactions, and consider furthering your education to expand your skill set and career opportunities.
From my previous experience that had guided me to where I’m at today, I can share,
1. Environmental Education and Community Building:
Getting involved in environmental initiatives or organizations that align with your interests. Whether it’s volunteering for local clean-up efforts, participating in nature conservation projects, or joining community gardens, actively engaging with like-minded individuals can broaden your network and deepen your understanding of environmental issues. Additionally, consider seeking out opportunities for international collaboration or exchange programs to connect with individuals who share your passion for environmental education on a global scale.
2. Emphasizing Empathy:
If you have had experience working in the corporate private sector and identify moments where empathy and human connection made a difference. Incorporate these lessons into your approach to shaping the future of the creative community, it could be hard to find the qualities in private corporate, become the change you want to see in the world with your project. As you navigate your journey, prioritize building meaningful relationships and fostering a supportive environment where individuals feel valued and understood. Remember that empathy is a powerful tool for driving positive change and fostering innovation within any industry or community.
3.Higher Education:
If you’re considering transitioning to a new career path or expanding your skill set, don’t underestimate the value of formal education. Pursuing further education, such as a graduate degree in your field of interest, can provide you with the necessary knowledge, resources, and credentials to succeed in your chosen profession. Embrace the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in your chosen field, and approach your studies with an open mind and a willingness to grow.
By embracing these principles and seeking out opportunities for growth and collaboration, it could open new doors and experience to learn more of your purpose and become new versions of yourself.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
At Studio Tejada, I’m always on the lookout for partnerships that resonate my values. Collaboration is central to my work, and I’m passionate about the potential for joint efforts to create together with like-minded people.
I’m particularly excited about teaming up with those who share a dedication to environmental education and nature-inspired art. Whether you’re an artist, educator, activist, or entrepreneur, if you’re committed to making a positive impact, I’d love to hear from you.
Let’s blend our talents to craft inspiring projects and products. Whether it’s brainstorming new collections, hosting workshops, or launching awareness campaigns, together, we can make waves.
