Meet J Primous

We recently connected with J Primous and have shared our conversation below.

J, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Overcoming imposter syndrome was a journey of self-acceptance, true heart healing, and embracing my unique abilities. Like many creatives and professionals, I often found myself questioning my worth and comparing my journey to others. However, I realized that these comparisons were the chains holding me back from my true potential.

The first step was self-acceptance. I had to acknowledge that my experiences, talents, and perspectives are uniquely mine and that they have intrinsic value. This realization was liberating. I stopped trying to fit into molds created by others and started celebrating what made me different.

True heart healing came from confronting my fears and doubts head-on. I learned to quiet the negative voices in my head by replacing them with affirmations of my worth and capabilities. This wasn’t a one-time fix but a continuous practice of self-love and compassion.

Owning my unique abilities was transformative. Instead of downplaying my talents, I started to highlight them. I realized that the world doesn’t need another copycat; it needs originality, and that’s what I strive to bring to everything I do. Embracing my unique gifts allowed me to find liberty and creative freedom outside of the box society often tries to place us in.

Divorcing comparisons was perhaps the most crucial step. I understood that everyone’s journey is different, and comparing myself to others only served to diminish my achievements. I began to focus on my growth and progress, celebrating each milestone, no matter how small.

Ultimately, overcoming imposter syndrome is about finding and embracing your own voice. It’s about healing the parts of you that feel inadequate and replacing doubt with the confidence that you have something special to offer. By stepping into my authenticity, I not only found creative freedom but also a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. This journey is ongoing, but each step forward is a testament to the power of self-belief and resilience.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three key qualities have been most impactful in my journey: resilience, authenticity, and continuous learning. Resilience has been crucial. The path to success is rarely smooth, and there are countless obstacles and setbacks along the way. However, I’ve learned that it’s not about how many times you fall, but how many times you get back up. Resilience has enabled me to keep moving forward, even when things were tough, and has taught me that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Authenticity is another cornerstone of my journey. Embracing my true self and sharing my genuine voice has been liberating and empowering. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to fit into molds or meet others’ expectations, but real connection and impact come from being unapologetically you. Authenticity has allowed me to build trust and deeper connections with my audience and clients, creating a strong foundation for my brand. Continuous learning has also played a significant role. The world is constantly evolving, and staying curious and open to new knowledge is essential. Whether it’s through reading, attending workshops, or learning from others, I’ve always sought to expand my understanding and skills. This commitment to growth has kept me adaptable and innovative, allowing me to better serve my clients and stay ahead in my field.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to cultivate resilience by understanding that setbacks are part of the process. When faced with challenges, take a moment to reflect on what you can learn from the experience. Use these lessons to strengthen your resolve and keep pushing forward. Remember, every great success story is filled with moments of failure and perseverance. Embrace authenticity by taking time to discover and embrace your true self. Reflect on your values, passions, and unique qualities. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through in your work. Authenticity is magnetic—it attracts the right people and opportunities to you. Finally, commit to lifelong learning by staying curious and open to new experiences and knowledge. Make a habit of reading, exploring new ideas, and seeking mentorship. Surround yourself with a diverse group of thinkers and doers who can challenge and inspire you. The more you learn, the more equipped you’ll be to navigate your journey successfully. By focusing on these qualities, you’ll not only build a strong foundation for your success but also create a fulfilling and impactful journey. Remember, the path may not always be easy, but it’s the challenges and how you overcome them that shape your story and make it truly remarkable.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

On my journey, I’ve learned that there’s a delicate balance between going all in on our strengths and working on areas where we’re not as strong. Initially, I believed that to be successful, I needed to be good at everything, but this mindset only fueled my imposter syndrome. Trying to be well-rounded in every aspect can spread you thin and dilute the unique gifts you bring to the table.

Focusing on your strengths, those innate talents that set you apart, can be incredibly empowering. It’s like shining a light on what makes you uniquely you. For example, I’ve always had a knack for creative storytelling and connecting with people through words. When I leaned into that, it was as if my authentic self was finally allowed to flourish. This self-acceptance helped me push past the doubts and insecurities that had held me back.

However, that’s not to say we should ignore our challenges. I never use the term ‘weaknesses’ when describing myself or working with my clients. I believe we all have strengths and challenges, which can always be overcome. Instead, I’ve found that selectively improving on certain areas can complement our strengths. For instance, I realized that enhancing my organizational skills would help me manage my creative projects more effectively. This targeted improvement didn’t just make me more efficient; it also gave me more confidence and reduced the feeling of being an imposter.

One vivid memory that illustrates this is when I was preparing for a major speech. Public speaking was something I was naturally good at, but the logistics and preparation behind it were challenging for me. Instead of letting this overwhelm me, I focused on refining my speech, pouring my passion and creativity into it, while also investing time in learning how to better organize my preparation process. This blend of playing to my strengths and selectively overcoming challenges resulted in a presentation that was both powerful and well-executed.

Ultimately, I believe the key is to embrace and celebrate your strengths while strategically enhancing areas that will support and amplify those strengths. This approach helps you stay authentic and confident, reducing the grip of imposter syndrome. Remember, it’s not about being perfect in everything; it’s about being exceptional in what you do best and continually evolving in ways that support your unique journey.
