We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful J.V. Hilliard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with J.V. below.
J.V., appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive in a variety of ways, the nerdiest of which is by participating in a weekly Dungeons and Dragons campaign which is critical to my authorship. It’s also important to stay current in the industry and marketplace so I continue to read fantasy books of all genres. And I run a podcast called the Realm in which I interview other creatives of all specialties which help keep the creative juices flowing.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I grew up with a love of writing along with Dungeons and Dragons, but my creative career had to be put on hold as I got into my government-focused day job. I was one of those “pandemic authors” who had time to write when everything was shut down. Now, I focus on both, which makes for busy days most of the time.
As far as what’s new: I’m excited to say that The Warminster Series will soon be a graphic novel as well as a blended reality video game created by Melderverse. I’m also working on spinoff novels for certain well-loved characters of The Warminster Series.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important skills that aided me were: research, practice, and determination. My advice for those aspiring to improve their skills is to stick with it, practice your writing, and stay determined and motivated as you get better when you keep going. Make sure you’re reading books in the genre you want to write in as that was a great help to me.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for other creatives to collaborate with. Whether it’s to star in each other’s podcasts or YouTube shows or to guest on each other’s blogs. They can reach me at joe@jvhilliard.com or at any of my social media links.
