We recently connected with Jack Ho and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jack, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose from growing up in such a special place. Waikīkī shaped me to become the person and athlete that I am today. I grew up with the most talented group of friends who all excell at different board sports, and have pushed me to be the best version of myself, in and out of the ocean. Duke Kahanamoku is the grandfather of modern day surfing and showed the world what it is to be a true waterman. I try to emulate his values and the everlasting impact that he shared with the surfing world.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Aloha, my name is Jack Ho and I am from Waikīkī, O’ahu. I grew up on the south shore of O’ahu and I am a waterman. I value showing aloha in and out of the water, and riding the best waves I can find. My career involves free surfing and traveling around the world to score the best conditions out there.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. has to be kindness. Showing aloha to everyone will get you a very long way and I think it is a basic practice in my life.
2. is passion. Having passion to chase my dreams has made my life possible. Being excited and passionate about what you do is a must for success.
3. is community. Community has helped me learn and grow in every aspect or my life and career. Having friends and family in your corner means the world to me!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents have always showed me how to be kind. Kindness and generosity is my #1 life goal and focus. My mom always told me “Nobody will remember what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.” That connects with me deeply because at the end of the day, everyone wants to feel loved and appreciated. My parents did a great job of showing me how to treat people with respect.
