We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jack Perry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jack, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have to say, I never really thought about it as “found my purpose” but more that my purpose found me after years of music lessons, participating in school bands, and attending different kinds of concerts, from Jazz to Latin to Hip Hop, where I was fortunate enough to see firsthand the incredible impact that music can have on someone’s life. Through these experiences, I began to understand the power of music in invoking different emotions for each person, as well as transcending languages and cultures to affect each listener.
While studying the music industry in college at Loyola University of New Orleans, I noticed that music industry standards tend not to value rising artists and often take advantage of newcomers trying to break into the music industry. It’s hard to make a living as an artist, despite the occasional breakout viral stars we all see on social media.
With this in mind, I created my label, Two Biscuit Records with the mission to disrupt the current standard, to give artists the freedom, respect, and support to express themselves creatively through their music, with the full support of their team behind them, rather than dictating their journey..
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In 2018 I started my own label, Two Biscuit Records to give artists more control of their music and their art. I want my label to be different, to be welcoming to new and established artists looking for a family of musicians and music lovers to join the label. While small right now, I’m using every opportunity I can to seek out artists looking for a new standard
I have been fortunate enough to meet and work with dozens of incredibly talented and up-and-coming artists through events I have produced in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Currently on the label we have signed Vinlisa, a Cambodian American, R&B singer hailing from New Orleans but now based in Los Angeles whose music combines heartfelt lyrics with mesmerizing melodies, creating a unique vibe that resonates deeply with her listeners. It was great to collaborate with her at a recent music festival in New Orleans that brought down the house!
As for me, I have been known to be a jack-of-all-trades, as a DJ at corporate events, local clubs, and music festivals, an Event Promoter, a Musician (playing piano and drums), and a Producer.
On the side, I work as an EMT in LA County providing emergency services at concerts and sporting events. It gives me the chance to meet people and use the more detailed and analytical side of my brain which makes me more creative when I get back into the studio. Plus, I like knowing that I’m serving my community.
In 2025, I’m excited to continue hosting events highlighting up-and-coming artists and local small businesses and releasing new DJ sessions to YouTube. In addition, I’m the executive producer and audio engineer of Vinlisa’s upcoming EP, Until Then, which navigates Vinlisa emotional journey as she searches for the one. With this latest EP, releasing in early 2025, her live performances, and music videos, she’s poised to take her talents to the next level.
And, I’m excited to announce the signing of an amazing R&B singer from the Bay Area, Zariah, to our label. She’s got amazing soulful melodies and timeless sounds that speak to the soul, and is someone to look out for as she releases her debut singles!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Taking a holistic approach to life influences who I am and what I’m looking for. Knowing we’re all interconnected and the impact that music has in spreading joy and just generally bringing good vibes into public spaces motivated me to focus my music journey on finding a different way. A way that brings harmony and uplifts artists in the community means everything to me.
Being open to new sounds and experiences is something that has always helped me improve my own craft. From the diverse musical genres I listen to on a daily basis, I’ve come to love surprising listeners by incorporating elements that you wouldn’t necessarily expect.
And finally, I would say I relate to “failing to plan is planning to fail.” In music, you can’t leave things to chance and persistence always pays off. Successful events take detailed planning to get the vibe just right. As a DJ, the wrong song can kill the whole mood and change the tenor of the crowd. And audio engineering and performing take hours of prep time. It’s all worth it when everything comes together.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me has been exposing me to countless different cultures and musical genres throughout my life. From a young age, my parents and grandparents took me to dozens of live concerts from jazz festivals to stadium tours to clubs in my hometown of Oakland and around the Bay Area which opened my eyes. It was incredible seeing how musicians could impact a roomful, or a stadium full of people with their art. Through these experiences, I became attuned to the true power and potential that music possesses which in turn fueled my passion for music as an art form and ultimately influenced the trajectory of my life. I hadn’t been sure what I wanted to study after high school and pursuing a career in the Music Industry just made sense to me. And as I’ve ventured out on my own, my parents have shown continued support, always encouraging me to pursue my passions but being mindful of everything I want in life. They make themselves available to share their insights and advice as I learn to better maneuver in spaces new to me. This amazing support system has allowed me to strive for greatness without fear of being alone in my business ventures.
