Meet Jackelin

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jackelin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackelin, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I got my work ethic from my family. I can proudly say that I have a family and a father who works very hard. He worked for everything that we have today. He came here with nothing, not even speaking the English language, and today we have a house, he has a company, and we have everything we could ever need. I remember when it was hard. When we were struggling to keep the lights on, but he worked even harder. Watching him work hard made me want to have my own business one day. He taught me to work hard so that I never have to rely on someone else for my needs.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Lucky Girl is a business that I started a year ago. It started from nothing, a random idea I had. I never expected it to become a real thing or project. I had recently started going to pilates and only had one pair of socks- a pair I had ordered through amazon prime the day before I took my first class. After going consistently for a few months I decided it was time I expand my sock collection. I began looking high and low but was shocked to see that every single pair of socks was over $24.99 for a single pair. I thought it was crazy. I had the idea of designing my own, and I began sketching a few ideas, just for fun. I designed a pair that I loved- the socks that are now known as “Good luck babe”. They are white with forrest green details, my favorite color. They have a horse shoe, a 4 leaf clover, and a playing card with the number 7. My lucky number ever since I was 5 years old. I knew nothing about starting a business or finding a supplier. Nothing about the costs, website development or sales. I am forever grateful for my partner and my friends who supported me and helped me figure it out along the way. And I sell them for only $14.99.

I loved fashion growing up. Ever since I was little I needed every pen and paper I saw because I loved to draw and sketch. I loved clothes and jewelry, playing dress up and drawing. Art was my favorite class. But I did not pursue fashion in college because everyone always said to me, “a fashion degree, what job are you going to do with that?” Instead I chose a marketing degree, and still found no job. Starting my own brand is a dream come true for younger me. She always dreamed of designing clothing or products and having the photo shoots and planning the feed. I think of her every time I work on Lucky Girl. It was a very scary project to take on, but I love every second of it, and I do not regret it at all. It has been a huge learning experience, and it showed me that I could have my own business and run it successfully.

There are so many aspects about my brand and business that I love. I love creating content, being creative, directing photo shoots, being both in front and behind the camera. Creating mock feeds and creating marketing plans. I have learned and developed so many new skills in this process. Skills that I can now have forever. And I am so grateful to everyone has helped me bring this brand to life. If it weren’t for my partner’s support none of this would be here today.

There are so many new things coming to Lucky Girl this year. A smoothie collab, new products, more fun photo shoots and pop ups. When I work on my brand Lucky Girl it is not work to me, it’s fun.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Work ethic, creativity, and leadership. You have to have work ethic to start anything. If you are not organized, or have discipline, you will get no where. Just projects you started and gave up on or couldn’t finish. Starting your own business is not easy, and without work ethic it will destroy it before it even begins. You also have to be creative, and think outside of the box. You can’t copy and paste someone else’s product or marketing, you have to make it your own. For me, this is the most fun part. I like to scroll on pinterest to get inspired. I have thousands of images saved as inspiration for every thing in my life not just my businesses. They also tend to keep me motivated. The last skill you need is leadership, but to have good leadership you have to be a GOOD leader. Not all leaders are good leaders. A good leader doesn’t yell, criticize, taunt or ridicule others. A good leader is understanding, helpful, constructive and is good at communicating.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I would love to help other small business grow as well. I am always open to collaborate and work with others. As a social media manager I love when businesses collaborate and help each other rather than compete with each other for success. There is always room for everyone and their ideas. People can always reach out or connect with me via email. Whether it is a collaboration with my business, myself or as a client.
