Meet Jackie Brown

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jackie Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jackie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

As a candle expert, I’m often asked how our journey began, and it all started with a deep love for candles and a personal battle with chronic allergies and sinus sensitivities. Many traditional candles, while beautifully crafted, triggered irritation, leaving me wondering if there was a better way. That question led to a mission: to create candles that are not only beautifully made but also safe and soothing for sensitive individuals. I spent countless hours researching natural ingredients, testing clean-burning waxes, and refining formulas to ensure each candle offered both elegance and peace of mind. The result is a collection of handcrafted soy candles that are free from harsh chemicals, synthetic dyes, and overwhelming fragrances. Every Good Ole Scents candle is designed to bring warmth, comfort, and luxury into your space, without compromising your well-being. Today, I’m proud to offer products that reflect both my passion and purpose.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As someone who has always loved creating in the kitchen, I initially thought candle making would come just as naturally but I quickly learned otherwise. It took nearly a year of experimenting, testing, and refining wax and fragrance combinations before Good Ole Scents was finally ready to launch in 2021. For several years, I balanced a demanding corporate career while nurturing my candle business on the side. In 2024, after being diagnosed with MS, my life shifted in a profound way. That moment became the spark to fully pursue my passion for handcrafting candles. Every new scent I create is inspired by the wonderful customers I meet at farmers markets and craft fairs. Their requests often lead me to develop fragrances that capture memories, emotions, and the comforting warmth that defines Good Ole Scents.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. From Kitchen Creations to Candle Crafting
As someone who has always enjoyed creating in the kitchen, I assumed candle making would come just as naturally but it proved to be its own beautiful challenge. Through patience, testing, and passion, I discovered the art and science behind achieving the perfect balance of fragrance and wax.
2. A Deep Appreciation for Scent
I’ve always had a love for rich, well-balanced scents. There’s something truly special about how a single candle can transform a space, creating warmth, comfort, and connection. Every fragrance I design is meant to tell a story and evoke emotion.
3. Blending Psychology and Scent
With a Master of Arts in Psychology, I’m fascinated by how fragrance can transport people reminding them of a cherished memory, a loved one, or a peaceful moment in time. Scent has the power to soothe the soul, influence mood, and bring a sense of calm into any space.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

At Good Ole Scents, we’re currently seeking partnerships with florists, boutiques, bookstores, and other small businesses interested in carrying our handcrafted soy candles. Whether through wholesale opportunities or display collaborations featuring QR codes for easy customer purchases, we’re excited to bring our warm, inviting scents to more spaces across the community.
