Meet Jacky Chokpapon

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jacky Chokpapon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jacky, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

The people around me have always been an immense source of motivation for me. They push me to work harder and inspire me to reach for my goals. My older sister set the standard for how I should value my education. I met peers and mentors throughout my life who were passionate and talented and encouraging. These people inspired me to work hard and be curious to learn more and continue to grow. I owe a lot to my community for building my work ethic up to what it is now.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a freelance illustrator, particularly interested in children’s book illustration. I am passionate about storytelling, and books, and the ability to connect with an audience through telling visual stories. Being a freelance illustrator also allows me to explore many of my passions and creative outlets. I illustrate for books, comics, editorial magazines, posters, as well as many personal projects that I sell at art markets and events.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe being open to critique and willingness to learn are very good qualities to have all throughout life. I have made many unexpected friendships and gained so many unexpected skills by being curious and wanting to keep learning.
I also believe in prioritizing time management. Especially in a creative field where you work with clients and art directors, meeting a deadline helps everything move smoothly. It also helps people trust and respect you if they know you can be punctual and efficient.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

Being recently out of school, the biggest challenge is adjusting to a completely different schedule. Being in complete control of all my own project deadlines and what my day to day looks like can easily be overwhelming. I quickly felt unmotivated and like I was never doing enough. What has really helped is scheduling time to see friends and daily tasks I need to accomplish to keep myself accountable. Post grad is a scary and seemingly never ending unknown. It helps to keep in mind that many others are going through the same thing and have optimism that hard work pays off.
