We were lucky to catch up with Jacob Andrew recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Keeping my creativity alive has a lot to do with mindset. Creativity when you’re a music producer or in the music industry, is more so just like any other job. Even when you don’t feel like being creative you should work on your craft anyway. Different things do play into what brings out the best in your work such as, environment, mood, inspiration, emotions and so on. I’ve been a creative person since an early age, so I find it easy and interesting to do what I do but even when I don’t feel like writing some music, I try to do it anyway. It keeps the sword sharp and the habit consistent. Being curious and trying new things or getting out of your comfort zone may add to my creativity. Sometimes even taking a break for a period of time may add to your creativity staying alive as well. You really just have to read yourself and know how you feel in that moment. Never force anything but always stay consistent. Be stubborn on your vision and flexible on how you get there.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My life revolves around music. Whether it’s producing for the Houston Rockets, myself as an artist, or CTM Entertainment . To Djing locally in Houston and nation wide. To teaching music production at Creatects. I’m all in. I work for myself and I plan to continue to grow in my industry. Right now what I’m intensely focused on is building my brand as Jacob Andrew and building the first Music production Academy in Houston, Creatects. These two brands are things I’m extremely passionate and excited about and I’m currently taking the steps to expand both. My artist career is very important to me as I’ve been producing music for almost a decade. I’ve managed to land a publishing deal with CTM and Play-N-Skillz in 2023, and get a some placements over the years. I do have some amazing music coming out in 2025 with some incredibly talented artist. One being with a Houston legend (I can’t name any names just yet) but this one will be huge for me. Aside from my artist Career I have Creatects on my plate. This is a Music production Academy in Houston which will teach the city how to produce, mix and master, and ultimately pursue a music career as a Producer/Dj.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Be willing to take Risk, focus on that “one” thing, be flexible with the process and stubborn on the vision which means to simply not give up if this is what is meant for you. No matter the industry you’re in. Be patient but have a sense of urgency. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. In order to improve you have to take massive action, fail and fail fast, then adjust accordingly.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
His name is DJ Palmo, the official Houston Rockets DJ. Just an overall big brand here in the city as a DJ. He’s been by my side during many challenges in the DJ industry here in Houston. DJ Palmo has definitely been a person who has never let my head go below the water. Some helpful tips from one Dj to the next starting out, talk to the one who writes the check, not other dj’s. Show love to get love, you can’t expect people to just like you without you being around and showing face. Really build genuine connections with people in the industry. Lastly, don’t get comfortable. Elevate!
