Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jacob Grapevine. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jacob , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found purpose in making people smile because they feel healthy and confident. A smile can change a room and when you feel good about your smile and you feel good because you are healthy you will attract others to you. I have seen time and time again a smile makeover change how a person carries themselves or how fixing a tooth can make a patient get the confidence to go after a dream. I love that I get to be apart of something that makes a difference in people’s lives.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Plano, Texas is saturated with dentists and I realized I would have to stand out and stand up for what I believe in. I believe patients deserve to know what is going on with their dental health and have choices and options for care.
Participating providers for dental in-network dental insurance offices; have contracted negotiated rates with dental insurance companies and agree to select materials and select services.
Unfortunately, with this network system, dental offices diagnose and treat based on a contract with dental insurance and not with the focus of the patient’s needs and desires. Patients have limited info and are rarely given choices for treatment. Most of the time patients are not aware of why the treatment is recommended. They don’t have a lot of time to discuss options with doctor. For example fillings are usually a cheaper material such as metal.
Out of network non-participating provider dental offices are not contracted with dental insurance companies. Patients may be responsible for 100% of all care provided. Patient can submit their own dental insurance claim for services and use their dental benefits. Dental insurance is different than medical in that it usually provides a limited amount patients can use each year for example $1500 per year for cleanings and treatment.
Our office is a non-participating provider because we want the doctor and patient to decide care plan not be dictated by insurance company. This allows for an open and honest discussion of the health of the patients mouth and the ability to draft a care plan together with the materials the patient wants and needs. For example, we only use labs in America for crowns vs. other offices may outsource and get cheaply made crowns from another country. There is a big difference in how this fits in mouth and how long it will last.
I have recently been doing more composite veneers for patients as these do not require grinding down of teeth like porcelain veneers, has a lower price point and can be done in one day. Patients love the option of this type of treatment and are ecstatic with the results. This type of veneer can last as long as porcelain if done correctly and taken care of with regular dental appointments for cleaning and polishing.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In order to be successful, consistency is key. Consistency in how you treat people with dignity and respect and consistency with Continuing Education training to stay current in the field. It is also important to be good at communicating with people. When a patient is in the chair they are often nervous and need a little extra care and compassion. I am a great listener and and am able to use stories and examples to relate to the patient and their needs. It is also important to take care of yourself. The practice of dentistry is a very physical one. It requires leaning over patients, being very gentle and detailed and some cases I do can take all day if it is a full-mouth smile makeover. I have found that regular trips to the gym, stretching and foam rolling has kept me in the best shape to be able to do what I love.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am looking to collaborate with medical practices such as Ear, Nose and Throat, Physical Therapy, Chiropractors and Medical Esthetics that practice in a more functional medicine type practice that wants to help patients with confidence and inner and out beauty. Physical health and mental health are so important to overall health and wellness. I have found that changing a smile can change a patients life. A new smile gives confidence for them to go after their goals and dreams and find happiness. There is a connection with your systemic health and your dental health. As a dentist I am in a great position to get patients pointed in the right direction to achieve overall health and wellness.
