We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacob Sentowski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Honestly, my optimism is deeply rooted in the stories I grew up with—particularly movies and superheroes. It may sound a bit unconventional, but those narratives remind me of the resilience people can show in the face of adversity. When I reflect on the challenges others have overcome, it puts things into perspective and fuels my drive to keep pushing forward. I truly believe that things do get better, and when they do, the hard work and perseverance will all be worth it. In a world where we’re constantly surrounded by negativity, I think optimism is more important than ever—and I want to be someone who contributes to that sense of hope and possibility.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m currently working freelance in the Michigan Film and Television industry, where I’ve had the opportunity to be part of a wide range of projects—from online commercials to films, skits, and music videos. Apart from that, I work as a cinematographer and visual storyteller, and to me, it’s never felt like just a job. It’s a passion that I’ve carried with me for as long as I can remember.
Recently, my good friend Qusay Alkahil and I launched a video marketing firm called Acceptable Creatives. We help brands craft compelling visual content that not only reflects who they are, but connects them with their audiences in a real, engaging way. Whether it’s telling a brand story or capturing the emotional rhythm of a film scene, I’m driven by the power of visuals to communicate something deeper.
Being behind the camera is where I feel most alive. It’s where I have the greatest sense of purpose—and control—when it comes to expressing myself and helping others be seen. Every frame, every cut, every shot is a chance to say something meaningful without ever speaking a word.
This path isn’t just something I’m pursuing professionally—it’s the lens through which I see the world. And while I don’t know exactly where it will lead, I’m committed to the journey. I plan to continue growing, collaborating, and creating with the same love and intention that got me started in the first place.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my profession, the most important skills I’ve acquired is Teamwork, Time management, and though it may not be a skill but definitely a quality, Passion. You need to be able to work well with others and understand that changes happen spontaneously. You need to be able to adapt as things come about and be able to keep up the passion that you started with until the very end of the project. then do it all over again
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m looking for people who want to tell a story. whether it be a movie idea, a commercial, a brand showcase. I want to work with people who have a vision and I want to help them bring that vision to life. We are in a digital age and this is the time to create
