Hi JacobAlexander, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?

After losing a job I had dedicated eight years to, I was approached by an entertainment company with a promising opportunity to perform in high-end establishments. At a time when everything in my life seemed to be changing rapidly, this felt like a beacon of hope and a chance for a fresh start. I threw myself into preparing for this role, but after joining the company, I was informed weeks later that they decided not to move forward with me due to concerns about my skill level. Given the upheaval in my life, this sudden disappointment felt like an even heavier blow.

Rather than letting this setback define me, I used it as an opportunity for reflection and growth. I sought constructive feedback and focused on improving my skills. This experience taught me the value of resilience and adaptability, especially during times of upheaval. It showed me that setbacks can be transformative if approached with the right mindset. Even amidst significant life changes, I learned that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Embracing feedback, investing in self-improvement, and staying persistent can turn obstacles into stepping stones.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m JacobAlexander, a songwriter and musician who blends R&B with hip hop to create a distinctive sound. My work combines soulful melodies with dynamic rap verses, aiming to craft music that resonates deeply with my audience. What excites me most about my career is the ability to turn personal experiences into songs that others can relate to and find solace in.

A key aspect of my brand is my commitment to DIY production. I put my hands into every part of the creative process, from music production to content creation. This includes everything from crafting my music and videos to designing my visual brand. When I encounter aspects of the process I’m not familiar with, I strive to gain a deep understanding and master them, ensuring that I maintain creative control and deliver an authentic experience.

Currently, I’m preparing for some exciting events, including my performance at the Chreece Festival 2024. I’m also working on new music and videos, pushing the boundaries of my artistic expression and connecting with my audience on a deeper level.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

In my journey through the complex and ever-evolving music industry, resilience has emerged as a cornerstone, allowing me to navigate through various setbacks, such as job losses and missed opportunities. This quality has not only helped me to persist in the face of adversity but also to thrive amidst the challenges that often dishearten others in this competitive field. Equally critical has been a deep understanding of the business side of music, which has empowered me to make informed decisions, strategically manage my finances, and ensure that I am appropriately compensated for my work. It’s astonishing how many artists remain unaware of the potential revenues their music could be generating, often missing out on earnings that are rightfully theirs.

Additionally, mastering technical skills in music production and content creation has been transformative. Technology has been a pivotal ally, automating the more mundane aspects of the process and fostering more efficient workflows. This mastery has allowed me to maintain a firm grip on my creative vision, ensuring the output is not only high quality but also true to my artistic intent. For those just beginning their journey, I recommend a deep dive into the technical and business aspects of music. What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

Over the past year, my biggest area of growth has been in becoming a more versatile and skilled performer and musician. I’ve had the privilege of teaming up with an exceptionally talented drummer and musician, who reintroduced me to aspects of music that I had unintentionally moved away from. Growing up, I was deeply engaged in learning various instruments and music theories, which sharpened my abilities. However, over time, as I focused more on singing and songwriting, I left the intricate tasks of composing to the professionals.

This collaboration reawakened a part of my musical brain that had been dormant. My partner brought me into a dynamic circle of seasoned professionals, expanding my musical landscape. This exposure rekindled my passion for comprehensive musicianship, from composition to live performance. Being around such talent and professionalism inspired me to elevate my own skills to ensure I could stand confidently in any room, among any group of musicians.

This journey has significantly enhanced my ability to engage with music at a deeper level, making me not just a better musician but a more inspired artist overall. Looking ahead, I am excited to continue this path of growth, blending my enhanced skills with my ongoing projects to create music that resonates even more profoundly with my audience.
