Meet Jacquie Joy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacquie Joy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jacquie, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I have never compared myself, my achievements or my music, to other creators/musicians and what they are doing. I think comparing to others can be detrimental to one’s own confidence. We all have our own special paths to follow! However I do love learning and getting inspired from what other people are producing and writing.

I am also quite objective and spend time critiquing my own work and making adjustments etc. I dont feel criticised when getting feedback/notes and tend to use other people’s thoughts to help make the music/sound even better! I this this mindset has helped me maintain a clear head and preserve my self esteem.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been composing music for film for 5 years and have worked on over 50 film soundtracks in this time. I have also taken on sound design and sound mixing duties for about 10 films and trailers. I’ve worked on a variety of genres and love the hybrid music/sound design approach especially for thriller, crime, horror, drama and sci fi genres. My brand is one of strong collaboration and flexibility. I am a perfectionist so will keep working until everyone is happy with the final product!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Learn how to produce a variety of genres of music 2. Learn how to mix (this takes time!)
3. Learn how to layer sounds

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The most important book/magazine that played a huge part in my development was Computer Music magazine. I have been reading and studying techniques that are showcased in this magazine for over 10 years. Also reading the artists interviews are super inspiring.
