Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to JacquieO Silvia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi JacquieO, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
At a young age, I was constantly assessing risks around me. I would instantly run through all the pros and cons methodically. I would analyze if there was any fear attached to failing after taking a risk. I fould that there is usually some form or another of fear or hesitation that can be associated with taking risks. I then developed a way to focus on the upside of the outcome of the risk. Usually through meditation or visualization work. I also look for opportunities to take on incremental risk, this helps to develop the self-confidence and strategic thinking needed to take on big endeavors. Lastly, I always sought out the advice of other calculated risk-takers. There is so much a person can learn from the lessons of other risk-takers.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My professional focus is on film making. Film making is as artistic as it is technical. A filmmaker takes on a leadership role in the production of a movie, either for streaming, television, or theaters. They often have many responsibilities throughout the lifespan of a film project. Some filmmakers contribute ideas towards a film’s screenwriting, casting, costumes & makeup concepts, down to the editing and marketing process.
Within the entertainment industry, filmmakers immerse themselves into a very important and demanding role. We create adaptive and original content with a variety of intentions that surpass entertaining an audience. The art of filmmaking is a way for some artist to encourage it’s viewers to consider how the film’s content parallels elements of our world through escapism.
Films allow us all to take a break from our lives and enter a world of fantasy and wonder.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful qualities that I possess which impacted my journey the most were, risk-taking, trailblazing, and self-motivation.
Taking the risk to accept a life-long career in filmmaking is exceptionally courageous at any stage in life. Like most, I made the transition from restaurant industry to film industry later in life, just four years ago. The risk of starting a new journery in of itself can feel like starting over. It can feel intimidating and at times lonely. Being the only person in my circle that was considering the career change to film, made me a trailblazer in my community. I have since paved a path for others to enter this wonderful industry of filmmaking without all the exposure of feeling lonely or intimidated.
I have learned through my experiences that I have an innate superpower that allows me to see the world differently and because of this, I have been identified as someone that can overcome a variety of challenges and isn’t afraid to do it.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The most helpful individuals in my life that have helped me build and develop the essential knowledge and skills I needed to be successful were my friends & partners, first and foremost, without their loving support and understanding, I would not be able to sustain a healthy career in the film industry.
Just as important, my mentors, these folks have protected my interests, my mental health, my focus, and at times, my sanity. Mentors offer a guided gentle push to keep you accountable and thriving in your profession. Mentors in the film community are a close knit magical group. Anne Hamilton once said, “Having the belief of a menor in you can make the difference between reaching the other side or not.”
