We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jade Griffin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jade below.
Hi Jade, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
Whenever I find myself stuck on a painting, struggling to try out new ideas, or feeling uninspired, I make it a point to step away from the current project and work on something else until I feel inspired again. I focus on activities that reignite my creativity and help me return to a more inspired state of mind. This could involve watching inspiring interviews or documentaries about my favorite creatives, reading about my favorite artists, listening to music, or going outside. Sometimes, I’ll even start a new painting or project, or even watch one of my favorite shows for a different kind of inspiration. Once I feel rejuvenated, I return to the original project with fresh eyes and new ideas.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hey everyone, I’m Jade Griffin and I am a Contemporary Artist based in Fort Myers, Florida. I am inspired by a lot of pop culture references, abstract expressions, shows, and everyday life and combine them all together to form my own world of expression within my art.I have been creating art professionally for almost four years now after I have dropped out of community college and I haven’t been back since. I have always wanted to become an artist since I was a kid. Since 2020 I have taken that risk upon myself to take my craft and my passion for art seriously and have sold my work and exhibited my work in group shows, gallery exhibitions, and artist talks, participated in artist residencies, and have worked on projects with other significant brands and nonprofits and more.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most impactful qualities in my journey have been consistency, discipline, and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone. Consistency is crucial for any success, especially in non-traditional careers. There will be ups and downs, and moments when it feels like you’re not making progress. It’s during those times that staying consistent is essential.
Discipline is equally important because without it, your focus and progress toward your goals can become scattered. Real discipline helps you stay on track, leading to consistent success and opportunities.
Finally, being willing to step out of my comfort zone and put in the time and effort that others might not has played a significant role in the opportunities and success I’ve achieved in my career. For those early in their journey, I’d advise cultivating these qualities—consistency, discipline, and the courage to push beyond your comfort zone—as they can significantly impact your path to success.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
While there are certainly benefits to focusing on your strengths, I believe that investing effort in improving your weaknesses can make you a more well-rounded and innovative artist. For example, you might excel at creating art in a specific way, but if you challenge yourself to learn a new technique or experiment with a different medium, you could uncover hidden talents and bring new dimensions to your work.
Relying solely on your strengths can sometimes lead to work that feels stale or rigid. Growth, both as an artist and as a creative, comes from pushing your boundaries and exploring areas where you’re less confident. If you never tap into new skills, how can you expect to evolve? By nurturing your weaknesses, you not only become more versatile but also open up new possibilities for creative expression that you might never have discovered otherwise.
