We were lucky to catch up with Jade Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jade , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Since I was young I’ve always adapted to life’s misfortunes and setbacks. Whenever something went wrong, I would bounce back. My mother taught me to harness the inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback or challenge, such as a job loss, an illness, a disaster or a loved one’s death. It’s funny now because I always felt she was so strong and hard and I was the sensitive one. But all she was showing me is that if you lack resilience, you might get stuck on problems or feel like a victim. You might feel burdened or turn to ways to cope that aren’t healthy, such as drug or alcohol use, eating disorders, or risky behaviors. Resilience didn’t make my problems go away. But resilience helped me see past them, I’m great at finding ways to enjoy life and better handle stress.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’d like to think of myself as a woman who undertakes the risk of starting a new business ventures that are unique , fun, that have WOW factors. I’m not really sure if that makes me a creative or an entrepreneur! I work a 9-5 that allows me to be expressive and creative with my work, but I offer marketing and branding services for the public, own some small side businesses, and social media marketing. I have a background in luxury sales & music/entertainment management. You have individuals who put their blood sweat and tears into medical to help heal, some put passion into law to save lives, and then their’s me who puts my love into development of others and watching them elevate. Managing, Branding, Advising is my niche and I’ve sort of become that go to in my city!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Understanding Hustling is an art form. The moment I earned and made something from seemingly nothing by maintaining the mindset of a go-getter I discovered the remedy.Hustlers don’t wait for success to come to them; they go out and get it for themselves!
Self-promotion is a necessary part of being successful . There is a balance to find in drive between complete humbleness and being a jerk in self-promotion. While you don’t need to plaster your social media and blog with personal accolades, you do need to be dedicated to promoting your startup by telling people what you are up to. I’ve always shown confidence in my startup’s successes. It’s hard to put drive in something you don’t believe in, so don’t be afraid of self-promoting and showing your belief in yourself and your startup.
My ultra strength, also known as my super power…CONNECTING! The saying “It’s all about who you know,” holds a lot of truth in relation to startups. As a business savvy woman, I enjoy making connections with many people in many industries to get my startup out there and help ensure its success. By nature, I’m very social, which is beneficial to the business aspect of my life. While you can use your connections to sell your product or service, don’t forget that some give needs to accompany the take. I use my connections as my go-to source for buying what I need for my startup, and the symbiotic relationships always benefit everyone involved. I don’t believe in shaking people down for what you need. I understand how to treat people well, I remain genuine in my relationships, and I treat my connections fairly.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth has been becoming vocal! And being vocal with a sense of confidence and authority. Once I started believing that I was worthy of being listened to my confidence changed! Whether you are in a meeting with colleagues, in a corridor conversation with your boss, or at home with your family, a strong voice begins with a strong, confident mind-set.I literally rehearsed my strengths and abilities each time I stepped into a communications situation. With that knowledge came strength!
