We recently connected with Jade Mcnair and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jade, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Purpose. That is a big word. Finding my purpose was a very tough and eye opening time of my life where I was initially struggling to find where and what I should be doing with my life. I was interchanging my purpose with my passion, only to recently realize that they are completely different. I had to do a deep dive of my multiple passions and identify how and why I show up to them. I now know that my purpose is to create safe spaces where people can be happy and feel at peace. These “spaces” are created in different forms, physically and literally.
I can think back to college where I co-founded a space for women in majors related to the construction field to get together and grow in their personal and professional lives with the support of each other. This was probably where my purpose, unknown to me, started to creep in. All my life I enjoyed making people happy but in college I realized there was a lack of spaces for women in nontraditional fields so why not help be the one to create it?
Right out of college, I started working in the construction field which opened a new path for me to be a trailblazer as one of the very few black women in the construction superintendent role. This representation helped push the diversity conversations across the industry allowing me to meet with and encourage other women that construction is a great field to be in. I think this was when my purpose started showing up more in my professional life. I created a space for women to explore career changing opportunities in an overlooked, but thriving, field.
Most recently, my purpose has been showing up daily in both my professional and personal life. A few years ago, I created The Sweet Therapy LLC to provide products that supported my purpose in helping people feel happy and at peace through the form of self care. By providing comfort through their senses (specifically touch and smell), I was able to tap into the role that body awareness plays in our lives. With an added cherry on top, I went to school to become an Esthetician to further teach people how skin care and self care work together to create a space of self love so that they can also live in their purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am so blessed to have many passions that I indulge in. I am a construction superintendent in the DC area where I work for a general contractor to build schools, colleges, hospitals, etc. I have a master’s degree in Construction Management and many years in the industry that has allowed me to thrive in this role.
Completely opposite of construction, I am the founder and owner of The Sweet Therapy LLC (dba Sweet Therapy). I launched Sweet Therapy in 2020 when I noticed that people needed help focusing on themselves during the pandemic. Sweet Therapy is a vegan brand that I created to promote skin care and self love. All products are handmade by me which include body butters, body scrubs, lip scrubs, and candles. These products help people focus on peace across the mind, body, and spirit. Products can be purchased directly online at www.SweetTherapyByJade.com or at a pop up shop in DC, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. We have new products launching March 2025 so follow us on Instagram @SweetTherapyByJade to stay up to date!
I am also expanding on the Sweet Therapy brand later in 2025 to provide skin care services such as facials and body waxing so make sure to follow me on Instagram @SweetTherapyEsthetics or subscribe to the mailing list on the website for more information!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The top 3 qualities that were impactful in my journey and still show up everyday are ambition, resilience, and grace. These 3 combined pushed me through the highs and lows of growing up in a nontraditional career and becoming a business owner which in return have helped build my personal and professional life. For someone early in their career, the best way to improve on these is to challenge yourself and take the risks. I know that’s easier said than done but I have learned, as human beings, when we are put in challenging situations and fight through them we come out stronger than we could ever imagine. I can vouch for the phrase “pressure makes diamonds” because I believe that I am proof of it. Although we are forever learners, knowing our true capabilities is a peaceful thing in life.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I would not be where I am without my mom and my husband. Growing up, I vividly remember my mom working so hard to get to where she wanted to be. As a cosmetologist, she worked day and night for years to finally open her own salon and positively impact the lives of everyone she met or serviced. She was the first person that showed me that I could achieve any and all of my dreams if I put the work in. Her support, encouragement, and many prayers have shaped me into the person I am and will always be my guiding light through life.
My husband has been the lucky one to support my early mornings and late nights as I live in my purpose. His continuous encouragement to take the risks that I tried to shy away from is what I need to grow in all areas of my life. Between my mom and husband, being surrounded by so much inspiration, motivation, and love have helped me achieve my success.
