We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jade Patteri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jade below.
Jade, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
You have to purely block out the noise! There are so many people with an opinion on your life, career, look, morals, decisions… and at the end of the day you need to focus on you, not others opinions. I often times remind myself if I ever get a rude or hateful comment, that the person on the other side of the screen (most of the time) doesn’t know me at all. How can you give input on a subject you know nothing about? That’s the way I like to look at it! If you love what you do and you believe in your vision then that is the only thing and opinion that matters. Now, help and accountability I do believe is super important for everyone, no matter what industry you’re in. However knowing the difference between people that want to hurt you and people who want to help you is extremely important! Most of all though trust your gut and block out anyone who has anything negative to say. Treat it like a language you don’t speak! I’m a recovering people pleaser LOL! Also I use the word “recovered” very lightly. Anywho, I remember a time where my whole life depended on everyone (even strangers) liking me and my work. I later grew up and realized it’s impossible for every single person to like you. First of all YOU have to like you, and once you do, and once I learned to truly love myself, negative comments didn’t hurt me as much. When you learn to love yourself I believe you then begin to understand your worth… and once you know your worth, it’s going to take a lot more than some negative comments to drag you down. I’ve spent years learning how to value myself and my work and it’s not always easy, but it’s worth it in the end because the only approval you’ll ever end up needing is your own. Love yourself, let others love you and surround yourself with people you lift you up and help drown out the noise of negativity!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a singer, songwriter, actress and dancer! My whole life has basically been finding ways to bring joy to people in these four art forms! I’ve been performing and feeding off of laughter and a smile from an audience since I can remember. I believe the way I’ve chosen to stand out is by always choosing love and grace and more specifically in my music. I’m in a genre that can be very revenge based and often times bring a lot of anger and remorse into the picture. For my specific brand I try to gear it more in a more positive mindset and less of a revenge based way of thinking. Not to say I don’t express frustration in my songs because I very much do LOL! However, I want people to listen to my music and relate to the emotions without having to hate the person I’m writing about. I love being in the pop rock genre and don’t get me wrong I’m a big fan of artists who choose to gear their writing differently than mine. I just wanted to bring a different side to this genre that’s not the majority! As far as performing goes I’ve been able to play and headline some amazing venues in Los Angeles such as The Troubadour, The Viper Room, The Winston House, The Mint etc… and on April 10th I’ll be playing another venue called The Whiskey A Go Go. So stay updated with me through my social media and website and hopefully I’ll see you all at my next show!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have impacted my journey the most have been patience, resilience and humility. These three specific traits will help you survive this industry. I’ll sum this up by saying, one, patience is key when your’e constantly waiting on people to decide if you have a job or not the next day… because sometimes you hear back immediately and sometimes you hear back a year later! Understanding that patience with auditioning, music making and dance is learning to have patience with yourself and your level of expertise, is essential to being in the entertainment industry. Two, resilience is so important! Especially because this is an industry of NO. You HAVE to learn to not take it personally and move forward. You will not get every job you go out for and you won’t be the right person for everything. Sometimes that can hurt your ego and make you feel like it’s a hopeless dream… but I promise you if you do not quit you’ll have a better chance of making it than people who do. Three would be humility. In this industry it’s easy for people to get a big ego and think no one is better or more powerful than them. From experience, confidence and cockiness can be very easy to differentiate and if you act like the second people might not want to work with you. Also with humility comes peace of mind that the world has other people in it and other people deserve a shot as much as you! Be kind and always stay humble.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents taught me is simply to NEVER give up. If you want it, go for it and if you know you have the gift sets to really do what you believe you’ll be successful in, then go give your 150% and go get it! I believe that people who work hard pass talent all day everyday. Don’t be lazy, work hard and don’t give up because that next audition or that next interview could be the one that lands you your dream job!
