We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jadeia Grimes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jadeia , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I’m so shocked this was a question to be answered because I truly thought I was in my own head! It’s insane but wholesome to know I’m not alone. Personally I have not gotten over imposter syndrome, I’m so grateful and have worked hard for this moment in my life but it still all feels unreal, but I’m learning to give myself grace and not be so hard on myself lol.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hey hey everyone! I’m currently a wax specialist and I say currently because as of right now the only service I do specialize in is full body waxing! I do plan to expand and offer more services to my clients so I’m excited for that! Waxing in itself for me, myself, and I is so much fun! It’s so satisfying, even challenging sometimes but also very rewarding in the end for many reasons! I truly love what I do because us women in general tend to be hard on ourselves, self conscious and I absolutely love that I’m able to have these women lay on my table, completely vulnerable and still be able trust me so much, they actually put the razor down and value what I can do for them and enjoy my company! I am my brand, I’m very proud of what I’m building, the end goal would result in a bigger building, more suites, and to keep doing what I love until my hands give out!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Some qualities I think were most impactful in my journey would be knowledge! People will trust you more when you know and can answer things about your specific craft. I absolutely don’t know everything but understanding the generic things within your scope is very helpful. Perfecting your craft is what will help anybody gain clientele! If you’re good at what you do and continue to excel at that that’s how you keep clientele and progress! I wasn’t always good at waxing but I was so determined. As of now I’m very confident in my skills but I’m still always wanting to get better! Personality is also a big thing! Being personable and honestly just being yourself will take you so far, people will appreciate that more! If you’re shy I get it but understand your client is probably shy to and it’s your job to make her comfortable and 9x out of 10 they will accept it and the rest is history! Believe in yourself and don’t let the anxiety tell you different!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My family, my clients and so many beautiful amazing people have honestly helped me overcome so many things to get where I’m at today. My clients continuously encouraged me to take the risk and start my own business. They made it seem so easy for me because they simply believed in me along with everyone else! I’m always being challenged but it’s only ever meant for me to see my full potential. I quite literally wouldn’t be where I’m at today without the love and thought from all my friends and family and I’m forever blessed to have them!
