We recently connected with Jae Dunlap and have shared our conversation below.

Jae , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

Resilience is an ability I believe I was born with. It’s always been apart of my being. From early childhood days until now. It’s knowing how to adapt, withstand, and prevail even in the midst of adversity! The key to resilience is recovery. Its power of overcoming comes from within. It’s a mindset, an assurance, and a belief that no matter what lies ahead, we can both face and conquer any obstacle through faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am the owner, operator, and founder of Lady J’s Studio, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, I write, create, and direct anything from Music Education Workshops and Vocal Arrangements to Providing Entry Level Consultations for New Singers, all while overseeing the on-site Photography services offered. When I created this studio, I was most excited at the idea of being on set daily, meeting new people, and providing opportunities to individuals of all ages! As we Celebrate Black Music Month, I encourage singers to book a thirty minute music consult found on our studio’s website!

Later this year, we are anticipating the launch of our Multiple-Genre Professional Vocal Arranging Services to Musicians and Artists alike! Whether you are on tour, rehearsing for a tribute or covering an already hit record, we’re looking forward to working with you and your team.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three skills that were most valuable at the beginning of my entreprenurial journey were patience, a willingness to learn, and having an open adaptation to change. One can best develop patience by being consistent and celebrating small wins. Those small wins will keep you motivated! Secondly, where ever you are in your journey, you must have a willingness to learn. I suggest that young people take direction from a mentor or a trusted colleague, then apply it to their organization. Great decision making early on will save you time and money. And finally, be open to change and opportunities for growth. Prepare for the unexpected, and remember that in the world of business, things are always evolving, decade after decade and you must stay current.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

Our ideal client is a young, talented, vibrant singer eager to learn about the world of music, and desires to sing professional background vocals, be it on the road behind a National Recording Artist, or your local Performing Arts Centers, Professional Venues, or Auditoriums. We are looking for individuals interested in weekly vocal coaching sessions to perfect their craft, and those who are willing to commit to a vocal performance program.
