Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaemen Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jaemen, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I keep promises to myself. I believe confidence and self-esteem are developed over time through experiences, self-reflection, and practice. Those little promises are all part of the practice.
Ask me how to build confidence and I’m going to tell you to recognize your strengths. Confidence grows when you lean into your skills and talents. For me it’s my ability to teach, entertain, and connect with audiences through music and humor. Recognizing your strengths will help you feel capable and valuable.
Overcoming challenges is the next step. Facing and overcoming obstacles builds resilience. You got to jump the hurdle. Life is not fair and it’s not easy, no point in crying over it. Accept and face the problems head-on. Whether it’s growing my music business, building my following on social media, or crafting engaging content for my students, each success I’ve had has boosted my belief in myself. Stacking that success helps build confidence.
Consistency, consistency, consistency! Attacking your goals to get a little better every day will boost your self-esteem. You won’t reach your goal every time, but pursuing the goal every day will ultimately improve your confidence. If any athletes are reading, you know precisely what I’m talking about. I run at least 13 miles every week. I can run a half marathon on a random Tuesday now. Those little victories, and apply this same mindset to your business. You have to make it a habit. The results have taught me to value persistence.
The next step is the positive feedback you receive. After you have racked up some small victories, people will start congratulating you, from students to clients or even the community I’ve built online. I accept the compliment and keep going. If you have enough people telling you you’re good, eventually, you will start to believe it, too.
Lastly, and probably the most important, is self-acceptance. Ultimately, confidence comes from embracing who you are. That comfort that comes with it is key to improving your self-esteem.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am in a unique space in life right now. I am 28 and just graduated with my master’s in teaching. My music brand (Hot Boi Activities) is finally catching some of the traction it has always deserved. I’ve also found an entirely new audience in education on TikTok (@hellomr.jones), leading me to more career opportunities. I am grateful but also a little overwhelmed. Creatively, I am eager to continue music, but I’ve also grown out of making some of the music I’ve made in the past. I feel as if my head gets so many ideas it becomes challenging to focus at times; because of this, I have placed more of my creative focus on the DJ side of my company, but don’t worry, I have been locked in the studio the past few weeks and aim to put out more lyrical content very soon! Follow me on my journey on TikTok and Instagram (@jaeprodigy); I’m constantly leaking musical content/teasers for my fans. If you are in the Washington King/Pierce County area, you can catch me DJ’ing at ‘Pizza Time Pub’ on Saturdays in Tacoma off 6th Ave.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Hmmm. First, I would say my creative versatility. I would argue that my ability to merge marketing, music production, and education shows exceptional creativity and adaptability. Whether I’m crafting relatable online content, guiding students through marketing projects, or producing music under the name Jae Prodigy at “Hot Boi Activities,” my diverse skill set allows me to connect with various audiences and excel in multiple fields.
If you wish to grow creatively, you have to try everything! It’s after you try everything that you start to refine your focus. Experiment across different fields to discover how your talents intersect, then overlap your skills to stand out. I would also recommend staying curious. As creators, we should be constantly learning, taking ideas from others and slowly making them our own. Oh, and collaboration (duh). Working with people in diverse fields can spark new ideas and approaches.
The second is authenticity/relatability. I have a knack for using humor with a splash of real-life experiences to engage audiences in my teaching and music content. This has been a key driver in my success. People resonate with a genuine personality. Translation? This boi keeps it real. My ability to tap into relatable moments made my content stand out and gain traction.
Developing authenticity takes becoming comfortable in sharing your story. People connect with realness, so authentically share your journey, challenges, and wins. Learn to listen to and pay attention to your audience’s feedback, interests, and pain. Empathize with them. I would also urge someone to get funny. Learn a humor style you are comfortable with, and use it to your advantage. Your humor and personal touch will set you apart. Humor builds relatability, but it’s most effective when genuine and fits the context. Find ways to use it that align with your personal and professional identity.
Third, I’ll go with branding/vision. My clear branding for “Hot Boi Activities” and your teaching persona showcase my understanding of creating a distinct, memorable identity. The edgy aesthetic, sarcastic demeanor, purposeful use of trends, and thoughtful audience targeting demonstrate a deep knowledge of branding and how to make it impactful.
A massive part of account growth is in developing a niche on social media. It’s okay to want to do a lot of things, trust; you are preaching to the choir here, but we got to lock on to just one thing for a second. If you like me and can’t abandon one idea for another, just make another account for your other ideas. Create a memorable identity. Similarly, carve out what makes you YOU in every field you pursue. After you find your niche, you must stay consistent across platforms. Posting, working, recording, whatever. A cohesive brand fosters trust and recognition. While you’re working, I recommend investing in your visuals and content. Eye-catching logos, album covers, and social media posts leave lasting impressions.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with. Iron sharpens iron, right? If you want to work on a project with me email me at hotboiactivities@gmaiil.com. I will see and respond to that better than a dm on social media. I am always looking for musical inspiration, producers, and artists. Let’s connect! Podcasters, I’m down too, if you have an idea, just send it my way, and let’s get to work.
