We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jah’lil Brooks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jah’lil , thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
I use them as motivation to keep going and I feel as if this world we live in is setup to see you fail so therefore I honestly don’t feel the need to entertain nor let someone hating get in the way of what I have going and where I’m trying to get at in life. To me there opinions or how they feel doesn’t matter just keep going because there always going to be someone out there hating! This your world everyone is just living in it …
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a photographer/ videographer and one reason why I feel like it’s special is being able to capture someone’s memorable moments. Another thing I like about it is the creativity in it , being able to capture a lot of footage and seeing the ending process! With in my 4yr career I have now invested into a new camera once shooting with a Nikon d3500 now shooting on a Sony a7siii which has not got me into videography.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back my artist vision and being ability to conceptualize and visualize a shot, capturing the essence of the subject and translating it into compelling imagery. Having this creative eye is critical for storytelling my work.
Another skill that I can say has helped me is me being able to master my equipment and understanding camera settings, lighting, composition, and post-processing techniques which have allowed me to consistently produce high-quality images. This technical skill set is essential for executing your artistic vision.
Then lastly being able to gain communication skills and being able to collaborate with others . With these skills I have been able to build strong relationships with clients, understanding their needs, and effectively communicating my ideas which have been crucial. This ability to collaborate ensures that the final product meets or exceeds expectations, leading to client satisfaction and repeat business.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My parents and my oldest sister has been the most helpful in helping me overcome a lot of these skills to be successful and where I am today. My mom has a background history of photography and being an interior designer . My dad is a creative in advertisement so all in there own way they have skills and traits to help me concur things and motivate me to keep going and being successful with my career.
