Meet Jahlisa Murphy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jahlisa Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jahlisa, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

My generosity comes from my grandmother, my grandma B who was my first caregiver, love, and true nurturer. I was fortunate to witness her incredible generosity, not only towards me and our family but to everyone she encountered. She opened her home to all, feeding anyone in need, and creating a safe haven for so many. She had a servant’s heart in every imaginable way, showing love, compassion, and care despite the hardships life threw her way. Her unwavering generosity in her love, presence, protection, and energy continues to inspire me daily.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

At Be Affirmed Doula Services, I provide comprehensive support to families during one of the most transformative times in their lives—birth, postpartum recovery, and early parenthood. What makes my work truly special is the deep connection I build with each family, offering not just physical support, but also emotional and mental affirmation throughout their journey. I’m passionate about empowering parents to feel confident and strong in their choices, creating a nurturing environment where they can thrive.

In addition to my work with Be Affirmed, I co-founded Be The Motherhood Village in partnership with the phenomenal Daneita Blalock-Hudson, a dedicated doula and student midwife who owns 4 The Journey Doula Services. Together, we’ve created a community focused on redefining traditional village support for prenatal and postpartum families, particularly within marginalized communities.

We recently hosted our first successful moms retreat, centered on rediscovering the purpose of self-love, rest, and unity. Our Motherhood Village retreat was a powerful gathering where moms connected, recharged, and found the village they had been seeking. The response was incredible, and we’re already planning our 2025 retreat to meet the growing demand from moms eager to join this supportive community.

Our goal is to continue hosting events like this, providing spaces where mothers can find the resources, connections, and encouragement they need. What excites me most about my work is witnessing the profound impact it has on families—whether through serving birth and postpartum families of Be Affirmed Doula Services or the communal support of Be The Motherhood Village. With Daneita by my side, we’re expanding our reach and planning even more events to continue uplifting and empowering families on their journey into parenthood.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are faith in God, having a teachable spirit, and the importance of seeking out mentorship while bringing others along with you. Each of these has shaped my path in profound ways.

Faith in God has been my foundation, guiding me through the highs and lows with a sense of purpose and trust that everything happens in its perfect timing. It has allowed me to move forward with confidence, even in uncertain times.

Having a teachable spirit is essential because it keeps you open to learning and growth. It’s about being humble enough to acknowledge that there’s always more to learn, and being eager to absorb wisdom from every experience and interaction.

Seeking mentorship has been invaluable. Having mentors has not only provided me with guidance and support, but it has also shown me the importance of bringing others along on the journey. There’s a unique strength in community and collaboration, and while our paths are uniquely our own, there are indeed times when we are better together.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes, absolutely! I’m actively seeking postpartum families who are a great fit, especially as I open up my calendar for 2025. I’m also excited to collaborate with individuals and organizations who are passionate about transforming lives and enhancing maternal health outcomes.

I’m looking for partners dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role doulas play, particularly through storytelling, funding, and advocacy. Whether you’re interested in sharing impactful stories, funding postpartum doula care for families with barriers to access, or even sponsoring a night of services for a family in need, your involvement can make a profound difference.

There are many ways to contribute:
– Share Stories: If you have a platform, consider sharing stories that highlight the importance of doula care.

– Funding Support: Whether it’s a one-time donation or ongoing sponsorship, your financial support can provide crucial postpartum care to families who might not otherwise have access.

– Business Collaboration: If you own a business, let’s explore how we can support each other. I’d be happy to add you to my client resource list, and I welcome the opportunity to add my services to yours as well.

If you’re as passionate as I am about making meaningful changes and improving lives, I’d love to connect and explore how we can work together. Feel free to reach out to me directly through my website at beaffirmeddoula.com. Let’s join forces to create lasting impact!
