Meet Jahna Rae

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jahna Rae. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jahna, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I definitely got my work ethic from my father. Growing up he was in the army and I think that seeing him do that and take care of our family really impacted how I operate in the world.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been making art my whole life, but didn’t start my art career until 2020. Lockdown reignited my creativity and I found myself wanting to create more and more after a few years of a hiatus. I think it was that drive that led me to be more brave about putting my work out into the world with less fear. I’m excited to working on a new collection in 2024. This will be a self curated show–something I’ve never done before. But I’m looking forward to the challenge.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think my ability to empathize and connect with others is a quality that has been the most impactful in my work. A lot of my work is about connection to self and others and being empathetic to understand people has given my art more meaning and depth. In a more technical sense, another skill that has helped me was my ability to understand and choose colors and composition for more compelling pieces.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents have always supported me and whatever I wanted to do with my life. They encouraged my creativity and supported me when I told them I wanted to go to school for art. Even though they knew it would not be an easy path for me, they knew I was passionate about it and they helped get me through college.
