We were lucky to catch up with Jaime Meyer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaime, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I was traveling solo in Malmö, Sweden when I had my true sauna experience. It was cold and windy and I was jet-lagged and exhausted. The heat of the sauna and the cold of the Baltic were unlike anything I had ever felt before. I watched teenagers and grandmas and everyone in between relaxing and socializing. I could sense how much it was all a regular part of their lives.
I had the most incredible night of sleep after, and I woke up determined to make it a part of my life also. After finding very few options, I decided to try to recreate what I felt on that day and offer it to others. Now I spend my days making people feel incredible and it is very rewarding.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I started Hot Spell as a winter pop-up at Zócalo Food Park in Walker’s Point in Milwaukee, WI. The response was immediate. People here are looking for healthy socializing alternatives, especially in the dead of winter.
In the second season, I began to offer sauna and cold plunge events at the shore of Lake Michigan. This also resonated with locals immediately. The health benefits of contrast therapy are incredible and people began to get hooked.
Last summer I brought on two new partners, Angela Damiani and James Shiparski. With their expertise in business and real estate, Hot Spell finally has a solid path forward. We are actively looking for a permanent space for a brick-and-mortar public sauna here in Milwaukee.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I had dreams of opening this business for years. It wasn’t until I started getting out and talking about it to strangers, that I finally began to move forward. I signed up for local small business meetings on Zoom and I went to networking events. For a local service business in a small city, I had to get out of my house and start making real connections.
Whenever I would begin to freak out, my partner would be there to talk me off the ledge. As a touring musician for much of his life, he keeps reminding me. If I want to be an entrepreneur, I have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
If you think you are interested in something, you need to experience it from the inside. Get a job in the field, travel different places that are similar to your vision, and actually experience what it is that you want to create. Just because you love going out to eat doesn’t mean you will love owning a restaurant.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
When we move into our permanent home, we look forward to collaborating with all types of wellness providers. We plan to offer guided sessions, classes, events, and retreats. There are so many amazing ways to mix contrast therapy with other modalities, the possibilities are endless.
