Meet Jaime Pattison

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaime Pattison. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Jaime, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I think it was a combination of factors. When you get to see the direct results of the work that you put into a project, or an idea, you are able to see how that work pays off and it is a very rewarding experience, although there are still plenty of hard learned lessons. I really enjoy what I do, and I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to pursue that. I also grew up with parents that run a family business and this undoubtedly influenced my way of thinking a lot and helped prepare me for some of the challenges that come with finding your own path as well.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an artists based in Detroit, I primarily make paintings, and occasionally take on curatorial projects as a form of research. I also was involved in founding DIVE, a shared studio space in Detroit.

I am currently working on a series of paintings responding to a series of financial institutions such as the historic Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Floor, and the State Savings Bank in Detroit. Taking the architectural features of these spaces as a starting point, I became interested the relation of these institutions to perception, prospective value, influence, and desire. Today, stock exchanges, along with many major financial institutions have a deep enmeshment in our lives both individually and collectively, particularly in the United States, and it is this relation, that interests me.

To answer your question about future events – coming up this fall I’ll be participating in Art Fair Detroit, happening September 27th – 29th 2024, hosted by ArtClvb.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I don’t think its all about knowledge, however I would say key factors that shaped my journey were:
1. Finding the right mentors, people that that take the time to really listen, understand where you are coming from and have a wealth of wisdom in your field from which to draw.
2. Finding a community, you can contribute to and through which you can grow.
3. The last would have to be consistency, really keeping focused on what you are working towards every day. Although this can end up looking like a whole lot of very different activities.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes! I am always curious to explore what other people are interested in and see how our paths might intersect. I was involved in the founding on a shared studio space, DIVE and one of my favourite aspects of working in the space are the conversations and relationships that result from working alongside the other artists for a durational period. My work on curatorial projects is probably the most straight forward way I have collaborated with others in the past, but I would also be interested in collaborating on hosting conversations, performances, and interdisciplinary programs. This is something I have begun to spend more and more time on recently.
