We recently connected with Jake Hinze and have shared our conversation below.
Jake, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
Changing up my environment and breaking out of my routine has helped me a lot in the past. Sometimes it’s a walk, sometimes it’s going out of town. Also reminding myself to not take it so seriously! Songwriting is supposed to be fun (at least for me haha).
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Humility, consistency, and authenticity.
I’m super lucky I get to do what I do – but to even get here – it took consistency and authenticity.
It’s a grind, and especially in the music industry, there are lots of artists and bands out there. So simply being the only band to listen to isn’t an option. Being authentic or vulnerable in your art, at least in my experience, is what people are drawn to. Success is subjective in art, but I can confidently attribute our success to these 3 qualities.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
If you wanna grow, then you can’t stay comfortable. Relying on strengths can get you by, but actively working on weaknesses is when growth happens. At least for us, we know what we’re really good at. We can play our instruments in our sleep or write a song in a day, but being in a band is much more than that. There are so many moving parts. Big picture things like albums or shows, down to where we can store our dead cases at a venue. We had to learn real fast how to manage a business – sometimes I spend more time in Quickbooks and on phone calls than I do actually making or playing the music haha. But now that we’re well-versed in the business side of the band, we can walk into show day knowing all of our ins and outs and have fun doing what we’re good at.
