We recently connected with Jake Randall and have shared our conversation below.
Jake, so great to have you sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our readers and so let’s jump right into one of our favorite topics – empathy. We think a lack of empathy is at the heart of so many issues the world is struggling with and so our hope is to contribute to an environment that fosters the development of empathy. Along those lines, we’d love to hear your thoughts around where your empathy comes from?
People want to be heard. We live in a world where everything is moving at 100 miles per hour, our calendars are packed, our notifications are overflowing, and it the midst of it all we can feel woefully short on authentic human connection. So for me it’s so impactful to give my clients space to be heard. I actively listen so that not only do they know that at least one person has truly seen them today, but also so I that I can be the best guide possible. I structure my coaching sessions so they can be an interactive conversation, not a lecture, in order for those essential elements of human connection – like empathy and encouragement – to have space to thrive.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a Financial Coach, I have the really cool opportunity of guiding my clients from feeling like they are lost in the woods with money, to confidently navigating to freedom. So many people say they feel like they don’t have much to show for their income, they wish they knew if they were doing the right things with their money, or they were just never taught money stuff so they don’t know what to do next. But here’s what I’ve learned – if someone can partner with them in that journey and walk them through a proven path one step at a time it is totally possible to start to feel in control. I will always remember something a client of mine told me – she was a school teacher just kicking off her career when she started her coaching journey and didn’t know much at all about handling money. But then one day she tells me that her friends are coming to her saying “hey we know you’re really good with your money, can we ask you a couple questions?” The difference? We worked together on a roadmap tailored to her that included skills and rhythms that are creating financial freedom in her life. I made it ridiculously practical for her to implement these things into her lifestyle, and we met regularly for accountability, encouragement, and celebrating wins. That type of transformation is what my coaching is all about.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’ve worked with a lot of people wanting to pursue financial freedom, and a number of them were eager to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams as well. 3 traits that have served me well, and seem to be common among people who experience the greatest transformation are sense of vision, ownership and discipline.
Vision opens the door to better. If you don’t believe that something could be changed for the better, you won’t pursue it. That’s why its so helpful to set before yourself stories of people who started where you were and got to where you want to be.
A sense of ownership is my favorite of the three. When we lack ownership, and say we are a product only of uncontrollable circumstances, then there is no remaining action for us to take except point fingers. But if we instead decide we are going to step up, engage and claim ownership over everything we possibly can, suddenly there are all sorts of things we could do and work on that could move our journey forward.
Discipline as I think about it here is that ability to do something even if it doesn’t provide a quick, easy fix. To show up for yourself again, even if its uncomfortable, in order to make those big, long term changes.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
People early in their careers who are willing to engage with authenticity. Clients who absolutely knock it out of the park are ready to be self reflective, open to try a new approach to money, and committed to showing up for themselves. I think of the verse in the bible that says “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” It’s an invitation. An offer to try something and decide for yourself. Creating freedom in our financial lives is so much like this – there’s an invitation to try some new skills and rhythms, and then see if you experience a sense of control and empowerment. For people willing to give an honest “taste” they typically find more relief and even excitement around their money than they ever expected.
