Meet Jake Ross

We recently connected with Jake Ross and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re very focused on here – improving our ability to make decisions. Everyday, we’re faced with decisions that can impact the future of our careers, businesses, relationships and more and so one of the most impactful areas for personal development, in our view, is decision-making. Can you talk to us about how you developed or improved your decision-making skills?
It definitely takes time and a lot of trial and error. You have a decision to make, weigh the options, take action and then reflect on the results of the decision you made.

What I began to learn is that making decisions that favor the long-term outcome is a LOT better than making decisions that only benefit the short-term. That is now the framework of how I make decisions as a business owner. Of course, you need to also ensure you’re aware of your affordable loss.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Feedback Driven

I am always looking to receive both positive and constructive feedback from my team, clients, and other stakeholders in order to improve their experience and my own service. If I never know what is going wrong, how am I supposed to make it better for other people?

Be open to giving and receiving feedback. That starts with creating a SAFE space for your team to be open and honest with you. Repeat that you will not hold anything they say against them. A question I like to ask is, “If you were going to complain about me or Build You, what would you say?”

I have gotten some AMAZING answers from that question that have improved everything about the business.

2. Practice what I preach

How can I justify selling someone something if I don’t do it myself? That’s why I do EVERYTHING we do for our clients for Build You as well. We come out with blog posts, post weekly on LinkedIn, etc.

Not only has this helped me refine my skills, but it also allows me to see the benefits and innovate in the space. If you tell your client to do something and think it will be beneficial for you as well, then you DEFINITELY need to do it.

3. Consistency

Count on yourself to be there when you say you will be. If you cannot hold yourself accountable, then you cannot expect your team to do the same. Show up when you say you are and follow through with your promises and implementing feedback.

3.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
It definitely happens, but I always know that there are people that are more overwhelmed than I am. I try to keep the mindset that ‘I can do it’ and nothing is impossible. All it takes is dedication and time.

I also know that during those moments that I feel overwhelmed, I am growing as a person and getting better. You need to be uncomfortable to grow.
