Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jake Tucker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jake, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
It’s important to know when to step away. Burnout and creative blocks, in my opinion, come from constantly channeling your creative inspiration. Just like any other good resource, it can run out if you don’t let it replenish. Take a day off, take a few hours off, heck even step away from your computer for lunch. You can’t force these things, let them flow on their own.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Jake Tucker, I am a freelance photographer based in Northwest Indiana. I am also a graphic designer, and I dabble with video as well.
I fell into this passion on accident, I was making tiktok videos for my college sports team and ended up loving it. Creating something for others to enjoy, telling a story and being creative are things I love to do. Shortly after college, I moved back to my hometown and decided to start my own business. I mainly specialize in Sports content, with a heavy concentration on social media.
Professionally, I focus on delivering great content to my clients as well as being a phone call away. I pride myself on never missing a phone call, and being responsive to those who depend on me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Work ethic, patience, and preparation.
A good work ethic is something that a client will notice right away, and it’s something that they will mention to other potential clients in a ‘referral’ situation.
Patience was key in my journey because oftentimes you don’t see the rewards right away. Obviously your clients will pay you right away (most of the time), but things like referrals or praise from others isn’t guaranteed right away. Patience also helps because in a creative field, it’s easy to get frustrated when things aren’t clicking.
Preparation is the most important quality to have and I still struggle with this. I try to prepare for every job/gig I have, but I still find myself being utterly illprepared. Whenever you think you are prepared, remember there’s always more to do.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The people I hold closest to me have been beyond helpful in this area. However, I believe that my peers are the ones who have helped me the most – my fellow photographers and creatives who have been nice enough to help me along this journey.
I’ve been on this creative journey for 3 years, and I am still learning so much from other photographers. I try to return the favor and pay it forward as best I can.
