We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jakejames Lugo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jakejames below.
Jakejames, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
Burnout is something that everyone has to come face-to-face with at some point. Eventually, you just get so overwhelmed or tired that you need to rest. The best way to minimize it is to scatter breaks and slow down where you can. Whether it’s taking a day for yourself to go out and walk around, go do some other activity that is removed from your work, or even just lay back at home and let your mind regroup for a while. Going for long stretches without doing anything like that is what really causes burnout, especially if you’re staring at a computer screen for a long time. I’ve had to force myself to step away from everything for a while and make sure I get some rest occasionally. That way I keep a fresh mind, stay vigilant in getting things done, and being smart with how much I take on for myself.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I love being part of conversations about entertainment and pop-culture, especially in relation to movies and gaming. It’s the stuff we all love to watch and engage with growing up, and it only gets better as you get older. I have a lot of fun making videos and writing articles that are published where I get to talk about all of this stuff. So I make YouTube videos every week, post on TikTok new videos daily, and try to interact with people over social media all the time. It keeps the fun conversation and the important discussions going. Jumping into the comment sections either on YouTube or TikTok has gotten better over time, because you get to go back & forth with people about the same stuff you love. And if they really like what you put out there into the world, they keep coming back and want to see more. Luckily for me, I keep producing more and more content for everyone to watch and enjoy, whether they love video games, movies, anime, superhero stuff, or anything else related. They can always count on something from me to keep them talking and thinking about more afterward.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me, the most helpful skills that have pushed me forward outside my knowledge of gaming and pop-culture were my open-mindedness, my dedication to improving my craft, and consistency in producing high-quality work. While it might be different for everyone who is part of the field, these were the things that I find were the most standout about me as I look back from the start of my career to now. I have an open mind to trying new things or stepping outside my own box and boundaries, which has interesting results. I’m dedicated to improving my skills and ability to do the work, especially if I’m working with others who know things I don’t. And I also try to remain consistent in what I do, never falling into the habit of getting lazy or letting my standard of quality lapse. How does one make things like this better? You do your best to listen to others around that have your best interest in mind and can offer you insight into something that can benefit you. That can come from multiple sources, like watching videos on YouTube or listening to podcasts, and even talking with family or friends that you can open up to. Not everything is going to praise you or hype you up. There are times when you’ll need to hear something negative or an area you need to be told to pay mind to and improve. When you take the moment to listen and really see what can benefit you, then you can make changes to better yourself and other aspects of your life and work that can really push you forward.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always open to collaborating with people and brands, especially if we share a common enthusiasm for many things in entertainment. The biggest hurdle for most collaborations that never happen is the willingness of both sides to reach out and say hello, get talking to each other and see how well you mesh together. As someone who engages with a community of people daily that are constantly immersed in the stuff that I’m passionate about, I’m the ideal kind of personality or influencer to work with to connect with them. A good part of speaking to any audience is being relatable, being honest and real, as well as knowledgeable about what you speak on.
So if you’re a brand or company with an audience that is passionate about gaming or pop-culture stuff, then it doesn’t hurt to reach out to someone like me. We can work together and make something special that people would love. It just takes both sides at some point to take that first step and say hello.
