We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jalen Ventrone. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jalen below.
Hi Jalen, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I feel like there are a few answers to where I get my work ethic. Let’s start with my parents, specifically my mom. When I was in high school, my mom worked multiple jobs to raise my siblings and I. At the time, I didn’t realize it was necessary. I was often upset because we may not have had snacks in the house or my mom wasn’t around to drive me where I needed to be. But she was working to be able to keep a roof over our heads, making sure we were able to play the sports we wanted to play and feeding us real food. At that time, I learned that if I wanted something, I had to work to get it. As soon as I could, I got a job and by my senior year, I had two jobs. What has always kept me motivated is working for the future. ‘This may be hard now, but the work you put in will show later.’ I feel like being an athlete growing up has helped with this, along with just always having to provide for myself. I went through this phase in my life, and I was not providing for myself, I had never felt more lost. When this phase ended, I found myself starting from zero. $0, no home, luckily I did have a job, managing a salon.
So in a few words, I got my work ethic from my parents, and I’ve seen a life I didn’t want, while seeing the future that I do want.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have a waxing business called Raleigh Waxologist, where I also do Gel-X nails by Jalen Lee. My salon space is located at Beauty Village of Raleigh, in Downtown Raleigh. I am also partnered with a Wellness Store and a Waterless Skincare company. I am proud to be part of these companies as they allow me to express myself. I strive to live a clean, holistic lifestyle, and through owning my own salon, I am able to implement this approach in all aspects. From cleaning products to the wax I use, to candles and after-care products for my guests to purchase, you will always find the best approach in line with European standards. I am happy to offer this approach while providing reasonable prices. Something very exciting that I have coming up in August is She Thrives 101, a podcast for female entrepreneurs to share the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to entrepreneurship.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Confidence, the will to do, and work ethic. If I could share one thing, it is confidence. YOU HAVE TO BE CONFIDENT. It is not something you are born with; it is something that is built within you. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will, and it all starts with confidence. Stop caring what people think because they are not paying your bills, and nobody who is living the life you aspire to will care what you are doing.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I am not sure if there is a specific person that has helped me overcome my challenges. But multiple women, getting in rooms with women that are smarter than me and have big goals. I am always trying to grow and learn something new, whether it is a skill or a mindset or maybe just tweaking what im already doing to make it better. There are so many free coaching options, you just have to be willing to put yourself out there, and be willing to grow with an open mind.
