Meet Jamaica Carter`

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamaica Carter` a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamaica, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?

I learned to communicate through experience and other people. I used to be a very shy person so when conflict would occur I would avoid confrontation, but over the years it became very tiresome to bite my tongue and suppress my feelings for the comfort of others. I learned how to speak up as a person. I learned to speak clearly with my head up, pronouncing words correctly, and delivering my point efficiently with a respectful tone. I developed the ability to communicate effectively with myself, for others, for the things I want in life and even learned how to communicate effectively with God.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have been hand crafting all natural skin care products since 2018. I started with just a sugar scrub recipe I found online and grew to making toners, foot scrubs, face washes and more. Along with my skin care and cosmetic business; So Sage Cosmetics, I also began hosting pop-up shop events where local small businesses and I would come together and set up tables/booths to sell our merchandise & goods. In addition to owning a skin care business and hosting events I also have a jewelry business; Onyx Fyve where I offer premade wholesale jewelry and accessories. On top of that I just graduated from Esthetics school this year to be a licensed esthetician. My goal is to be the best at everything I do and pursue.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The 3 qualities that were and continue to be the most impactful on my journey is my relationship with God, my ability to be a leader and always stay true to who I am, and being resilent. My advice to anyone who is early in their journey is to put God first. Keep God in every part of your life and watch it blossom. Never give up on yourself and If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will. It doesn’t matter if your dream doesn’t make sense to anyone around you, God put it in your heart because he knew you would see it through. Trust him and trust yourself.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I open Pandora, find a gospel station and let Jesus take the wheel. Gospel music has been such a saving grave for me during the last couple of years. I grew up on the church choir so I’ve always been familiar with gospel music but baby… this new gospel… will have you 2-stepping for the Lord. It’s so uplifting and rejuvenating. I honestly feel better after 2-3 songs. Don’t sleep on gospel music!
