We recently connected with Jamal Marrush and have shared our conversation below.
Jamal, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Growing up I often took having a good work ethic for granted. Fortunately for me, I have grown out of that phase and am able to apply all my focus and effort into bettering myself and building my business. Being married, my wife Brittanie is a major motivation and provides me with that continuous push and drive that I need to maintain the work ethic that I have today. Having that outside motivational support to remind me of what I’m working so hard for is essential, but you also must want to be disciplined and focused for yourself and your own personal development! My wife and my own internal drive for lifelong personal development is where my work ethic comes from.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am proud to have built, and continue to lead, my own independent insurance agency, Marrush Insurance Services. My agency focuses on a wide range of insurance products such as Medicare, Employee Benefits (such as Group Health Insurance), Annuities, Life, Disability and Long Term Care Insurance. As a broker, my focus is to educate my clients about the ins and outs of their policies. I take the time to fully understand their needs and goals, and work with them to develop a plan that provides the protection they need, while also aligning with their financial objectives. Unfortunately in today’s environment, insurance has become a transactional business, and transactional sales leads to “customers” that are most often unaware of how their policy works and important details about their coverage. It was vital to me to have a business model where our goal was to remove the transactional experience and provide an advisory service where we develop life-long relationships with our clients. This missing piece of the insurance business was paramount in my reasoning to eventually starting my own insurance agency.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First, from a business aspect, is making sure you are doing something different to make yourself stand out from the rest in the best way possible.
Second, would be what we were talking about earlier, which is work ethic. Developing a strong work ethic and being patient in whatever the process may be to get to your desired outcome and goals is essential.
The third and final thing is believing in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, then why would anyone else? Ever since I have put that thought in my mind, it has become a driving force behind my actions and decisions to get me to where I am today. My advice to those early in their journey is to cultivate self-belief. Trust in your abilities, embrace your strengths, and let that belief propel you forward towards your goals. This is by far the most important quality one can develop.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played an important role in your development?
That would probably be “Make your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life … And Maybe the World”. This book was written by Admiral William H. McRaven, a Navy Seal, and is honestly the quickest read anyone will ever have in their life. Yet in this small book are profound stories from Admiral McRaven’s career, with parallels and analogies on how to apply the moral of those stories to your life, to be a better person with self discipline, and a believer in yourself and your abilities. Each chapter is a specific story from an event in the Admiral’s career with a moral analogy that hits home every time.
