We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamar Jenkins Sr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamar below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Jamar with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from both of my grandfathers. One owned his own construction company, very skilled with his hands. Back in those days men did understand the importance of education but understood hard work, my grandfather had a third grade education but was very skilled with numbers and manual labor. My other grandfather was a landscaper where he worked in the field for over 20 years. The commitment every early morning to get the job done for his customers. One day i went out with him to help, the blood, sweat and tears i received from that outing really taught me the value of hard work, as he would always say “you have to work hard for what you want”.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I grew up in the trenches of Miami, Florida. Being from the hood sometimes you become a product of your environment. I did my fair share of unproductive activities but the essence of success is something i had to really learn. The big brothers and father figures i lured myself to were not pillars of the community. We did not know anything about giving back to the community or doing positive things. I found a real love and appreciation for music, i thought being a neighborhood rapper and songwriter was the next great thing. Doing shows, writing music was my escape and an avenue to tell my story. Now being older and a father, the passion for music is still there but being a rapper isn’t the realistic goal anymore. As though i always will appreciate the art and the craft i will soon find another way and my place in the music world, but as of now i try to teach my children the value of hard work in giving back. Since I’ve started my company JayCold Heating &AC Repairs i make it a person goal to go back to the school i received my training to sponsor and bring up the next best HVAC technician to take under my wing and provide jobs. These days it’s all about giving back. If I’m not traveling, being with my kids or building my company. I’m giving back to my community. My brother from another mother has this amazing nonprofit organization where i serve as a board member. We’re changing lives every single day. Giving back to the community with productivity. That is the only music i make these days.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patient- Being patient with yourself and your growth. No one grasp everything the first time and not everyone has the right people around to show and teach. Which brings me to the next one….
The right people in your corner- It is a reason the phrase goes, “your network is your net worth “. Not everything is about who you know. Sometimes it’s about who you associate with.
Eager to Learn- Having the eager to learn and to really want it.
Faith- Having the faith to believe you can do it, having the people around you that believe you can do it and believing in God to do it for you.
I’m sorry but i had to add the 4th lol.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My big brother Dwight Thomas aka (MrIntelligentlychilled) himself. He has helped me with the transition and the development i needed to get to the next level. The positive figure, teaching me about business, investing, giving back, guidance on certain things. Helped me to balance my mind and focus on the qualities that I’ve already obtained. To summarize his effect on my life he was the sharpener. As he would always say “ i can’t take credit for the man i have become” this is what family supposed to do.”
And as always the support my from kids, friends and family that understood my vision.
