Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Dale. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
James , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my parents. My father emigrated here from Jamaica in 1972 with $50 to his name. He came from humble beginnings, but he was able to start a construction business with his cousin Martin and became a self-made entrepreneur. He eventually sold his shares in the company when he met my mother.
On the other hand, my mother traveled to Canada at the tender age of 16 on a work program as a nanny. She met my aunt (my father’s sister) at a park while babysitting, and she introduced her to my father. Sparks flew, and the rest is history.
While in the States, my mother became a housekeeper, a CNA, a chef, and a real estate agent.
My parents were married for twenty-seven years until my father passed away in 1993. My mother didn’t give up; she kept the family together on a shoestring budget. My brothers and I all turned out to be upstanding citizens.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I wear a lot of hats– a renesaince man. First, I am a child of God, a husband, and a father of three daughters. My passion is writing poetry and stories about my childhood growing up in The Bronx. I independently published five books with one of my older brothers, and I started a natural juice company with my coworker in 2021.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My most impactful skill is being a great listener. I recently returned to school and studied creative writing to hone my writing skills. As an adult student, I learned that I don’t know everything. The only way to meet your goals is to be humble and listen to experienced people in your field of interest whose advice will guide you through to your discipline.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle I am facing right now is juggling my passion (writing) and my day job. Presently, I am getting a book published to earn enough passive income to focus more on writing.
