We recently connected with James Dietrichson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi James, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?
Going through the struggles I have faced in life, I had two choices to make, one being let it overcome me or the other being that I overcome it.
Seeing other people go through hard times also played a major role in my empathy. I never want anyone to feel the pain that I have experiences but I know that people are. With that being said I made it my life mission to be try and help all those who cross my path.
My mother made a huge impact on me while growing up. Having to raise 5 kids as a single mother who has been through abuse and has PTSD as well as medical issues but yet still gets up everyday and takes care of her dutys showed me courage and strength. The love she has for us and the world is inspiring and taught me what it means to love.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Growing up in a not so traditional sense, I had to find my own way. When I was 13 years old, I was assaulted and had gotten severely injured with brain damage and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Being so young this made it so I had trouble learning and doing simple task that everyday people do. I was out of school for a couple of years, lost all my friends and fell into depression and anxiety. Music and the arts were the only thing that gave me happiness and helped me feel something… more. I at that point decided to dedicate my life to music and to navigate towards more self-expressive projects.
For years I taught myself how to make music for the purpose of healing myself and helping others through difficult times. When I felt comfortable with my music I decided to take a new venture into the sculpting world. Since then I have worked on major projects for amusement parks, netflix, and a ton of residential and commercial jobs. My company WOW Sculptures designs anything from simple waterfalls to giant creature like sculptures. We have done work all over the country including in NYC with the Phantom of the Opera mask that was hanging in time square for some time.
As I continue on with my music career and sculpting business, one of the main things I love most about it all is being able to connect with other people and see the smile on their faces. Both music and sculpting is exciting to do and exciting to share. I put my all into it and found a sense of freedom in doing so.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities would be…
1. Compassionate – Being able to see the good in all people and situations and working with, not against the world around me and what life has offered me.
2. Drive – My drive is something that many people say they rarely see. I don’t take no for an answer and when I do, I don’t sit and dwell on it, I say okay life, I know you have something else to offer me that will excel me in the direction that is most beneficial, and I continue on with my work.
3, Discipline – Denying myself of many worldly pleasures for temporary gains and seeking the “longer route” to ensure success and credibility.
Some advice I have for others? Never give up on your dreams. Consistency is Key in this world because the more you knock, the more doors that will open. When you walk through those doors, you never know what is on the other side but most of the time, its more opportunity, friends and experiences that will shape who you and into who you want to be.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
The most difficult challenge currently is getting myself out there more. One man can only do so much, and it is hard at times to reach out all the way when there are so many walls in the way. Even though I am a people person and am great in my physical environment, with social media and marketing, I have yet to really hit the nail on the head. Maybe it is the monetary side that is so demanding when it comes to promotion or maybe I just have yet to find the niche that captures the algorithms. But when it comes to one-on-one interactions in person, I believe I flourish under all circumstances.
