Meet James Lough

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Lough. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi James, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
There’s always been a strong work ethic in my family, sometimes to a fault! But I credit my parents for helping me develop grit. And now, my wife and business partner Jenn is my resilience rock.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We’re excited about our new development, Historic Kindergarten Tours! Most people don’t know that kindergarten was not always in schools. Or that it was a movement so revolutionary that, back in 1800s Germany, where it started–the government banned it!

Savannah’s role in the revolutionary Kindergarten Movement was essential, and the beautiful building we’re located in, the Kate Baldwin Free Kindergarten, was where it was all centered. A little secret is that Savannah’s Kindergarten Movement played a big role in the founding of the Girl Scouts! The Historic Kindergarten Tour shows how all this happened.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Networking is hugely important. Establishing contacts and connections across the Savannah has been instrumental to our success. There are so many highly-skilled people in Savannah! Why not let them share the load and the wealth?

Of course marketing is also huge. Getting the word out and keeping it current on social media, via email blasts, and word of mouth is crucial to keeping your name in the public eye.

Finding ways to stay calm while juggling lots of balls is essential. Whether it’s exercise, yoga, qigong, meditation–all of which we offer at Clearing House–staying calm helps keep us organized, and staying organized keeps us going!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Since our upcoming Historic Kindergarten Tour has everything to do with education, we would love to connect with educators of all stripes: teachers, administrators, public and private school folks, home school folks–anyone who is interested in the education of our young people. The Kindergarten Method is both simple and sophisticated, creative, fun, and effective. We’d love to help education professionals return to the roots of education and see how to enhance their efforts.
