We recently connected with James Pratt and have shared our conversation below.
Hi James, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re very focused on here – improving our ability to make decisions. Everyday, we’re faced with decisions that can impact the future of our careers, businesses, relationships and more and so one of the most impactful areas for personal development, in our view, is decision-making. Can you talk to us about how you developed or improved your decision-making skills?
Developing my decision-making skills has been a journey marked by experiences, risk-taking, and personal growth. Stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing self-improvement have played crucial roles. I find that establishing clear objectives makes daily decisions easier, while long-term decisions, carrying greater weight, are simpler when informed by past experiences or a framework aligned with my passions and life objectives.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My current role is of Head of Film for Mogul Productions in Hollywood, but before moving to Los Angeles I grew up in Sydney Australia and was a 4-time REB Australian Auctioneer of the winner selling real estate by auction as well as studying I acting at a school called NIDA ( National Institute of Dramatic Art )
My first break came when I made a $200 short film called ‘New York Model Agent in a very remote town in Australia, the film, was selected for the NBC Universal Shorts Film Festival in California. This propelled my journey as NBC expressed interest in acquiring a feature version of the short and opened up doors with studios in Los Angeles.. Since then I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside several Academy Award winners in the US and have been fortunate enough to receive some prestigious awards along the way, including Best Actor at the Beyond Hollywood Int’l Film Festival, Best Actor Fox International Film Awards, Best Director at the 2022 Cannes film Awards and was Australia’s Top 5 under 35 in 2019.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my journey, I’ve found these qualities to be essential.
1) Ambition – which drives you forward pushing you to pursue your own dreams, you can’t be living a safe predictable life if your personality is ambitious.
2) Follow your Heart – I’ve learned to trust my intuition and follow your heart, as this will lead you to your true passion and fulfilment. This often means dealing with obstacles or a less smooth path, but the bigger the obstacles the bigger the triumph.
3) Be Thankful
I’ve found that support comes in various forms, often in small gestures of kindness and encouragement from those around you that you take for granted. These small acts, like a stream merging into a river, have play a significant role in shaping your journey toward success
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking for collaborations or to just connect with anyone with ambition.
