We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Quinn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
From learning from every loss along the way. I realized some time ago that you only loose if you choose to stay down. Rejection and loss is a part of business but winning comes from what we learn and how we respond to the losses.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an award winning actor & director from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I’ve been acting since I was a youth but decided to pursue it professionally in 2011. I have acted in more than 60 movies and tv shows. I have also acted in dozens of commercials as well as on stage.
In recent years I have written and directed several of my own films such as the multi time award winning boxing film “SANDMAN” & “Who Do You Say IAm?”
I travel all over the world working my craft. It’s a journey like no other. The people you meet and the places you see are astonishing!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities / skills that were the most impactful for me were.
1) Adapting to all situations that arise on set. When you can turn the unexpected issue into a positive outcome you can do just about anything.
2) Preparing your materials obsessively so that the production company is never waiting on you. When they realize they can count on you they will give you more creative freedom as they trust you with it.
3) A willingness to always learn. Never think that you know it all. You can lean from every situation. When you can allow yourself to keep learning, you then open the door to keep growing.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The most important book I’ve read that has helped my development has been “Acting in Film” by Michael Cain. It has been the most influential material I’ve ever studied. Michael provides insight that has forever changed the way that I handle myself onset & how I approach my technique. It’s outstanding!
